Preston Sets School-Record to Open Asbury Season; Gassmann Takes Second

STORY - THE ESSENTIALS
RICHMOND, Ky. --- The Asbury Cross Country teams opened their 2024 season on Saturday competing in the annual Cross Country Jamboree at Berea College. Super senior Wes Preston opened his fifth and final fall season with a new Asbury school record of 20:29.5 for the seldom run 6 Kilometer distance, trimming three seconds off of the previous standard held by teammate Cameron Tapp.

Freshman Landon Driggers was the next Eagle to land with a time of 20:48.5. He was followed in scoring positions by Jojo Ernst, Dan Kersey, and Jeremy Jordan.

Preston paced his teammates to a third-place finish among the four schools participating. Centre College easily won the meet with 19 points followed by Berea College (64), Asbury (76), and Transylvania University (81).

Bailey Gassmann led the way for the Asbury women's team with a second place individual finish in the women's 4 Kilometer race in a time of 15:26.7. Lily Anne Rinehart bettered her time from a year ago in this meet by 25 seconds, crossing the line in 17:15.3.  Also scoring in the race were Addison Mattingly, Lucy Kate Gibson, and Sarah Grimes.

Like the men, the women's team finished third in the meet with Centre cruising to victory with 22 points followed by Transylvania (50), Asbury (76) and Berea (94).

The next competition for the Eagles will be the Hanover College Invitational on September 14.

STORY - QUOTE
"This was a pretty good opener for us. Wes is primed for success this fall.  Bailey will miss about half of our competitions for the Adventure Leadership block-semester, but I'm really excited to see what she can accomplish in the meets when she is able to join us.  Landon and Lily Anne ran great today.  We were a bit depleted today by some of the upperclassmen involved in the wedding of our recent All-American Carolina Trumpower to Trey Miller, brother of our team captain Ava Miller.  When we get everybody on board for a race think we can do quite well."
