The Asbury Hall of Fame began with the inaugural class in 2004. The program enshrines those individuals who have made significant contributions to our intercollegiate athletic program during their time at Asbury University and those individuals who graduate from Asbury and continue athletic success elsewhere.
The First Class: 2004
Dr. Tom Harper '64 - 30 years of service to the HPERA department; 6 tennis Coach of the Year honors.
David Penalva '78 - Asbury's first All-American who starred for the Eagles in the 1970's. During his time at Asbury, the soccer team qualified for national tournaments and defeated NCAA programs such as the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville.
Rita Pritchett '69 - 20 years as Asbury's volleyball coach who also coached tennis, soccer, softball, and track and field. Named athletic director in 1989, giving her the distinction of being the first female athletic director in the state of Kentucky.
Steve Smith '77 - Head basketball coach of the prestigious Oak Hill Academy Prep in Mouth of Wilson, Va., after an accomplished athletic career at Asbury University.
Winston Smith '50 - Helped begin the Asbury athletic program and served as Asbury's first basketball coach.
Kathryn Cochran-Wiggam '95 - Only Asbury athlete to earn four letters in three different sports: basketball, softball, and tennis.
Cecil Zweifel - Founder of Asbury University athletics; Asbury's winningest soccer coach, long-time baseball coach, and early athletic director. Coach Zweifel and the 1977 Asbury men's soccer team made the decision to not play in the NAIA championships due to the championship game scheduled for a Sunday. The decision resulted in a new rule barring Sunday championships in the NAIA, a rule still in policy use today.
The 2005 Class:
Neal Butler '89 - Outstanding cross-country runner at Asbury; coached the women's cross country team to the NAIA nationals three times; Region XII Coach of the Year three times.
Stan Wiggam '69 - Started Asbury's cross-country program in 1971, serving as coach until 1983. Wiggam was named NAIA District 32 Coach of the Year numerous times. Served as Asbury's tumbling team coach for 18 years. Served as Director of Athletics from 1983-85.
The 2006 Class:
Barbara Crouse '69 - Founder of the Asbury swimming program. Involved in Asbury athletics as an athlete and coach from 1965 to 2001. Crouse qualified numerous swimmers for regional and national events despite sub-standard facilities. Also served as the women's tennis coach.
Jason Price '00 - Asbury's all-time leading scorer in men's basketball with 2,865 points. Led the NAIA in scoring his senior season with 955 points, a 25.8 points per game average. The accomplishment earned Price an honorable mention selection to the 2000 All-NAIA Team.
Tonya Maupin '94 Webb - First female athlete to have a jersey retired in the Luce Center. Ranks in the top four of 11 offensive categories for the history of Asbury's volleyball program. Four-year selection to the KWIC All-Tournament team.
The 2007 Class:
Karen Stevens '84 - Four time All-Conference selection in field hockey. One of the top athletes in the foundation of women's athletics at Asbury. Led field hockey team to a 10-3 record during her junior year.
Ron Brown '74 - Led men's soccer team to 1972 and 1973 NAIA District 24 Championships. Scored 31 goals in his career including 22 goals in the 1971 season. The team compiled a 22-10-4 mark during his career.
The 2011 Class:
Gary Kempf - Served as athletics director from 2005-2011 and assistant swimming coach from 2006-2011. The number of student-athletes doubled during his tenure as AD. Kempf was instrumental in the effort to bring back the baseball and softball programs after a multi-year hiatus. Also started the men's and women's golf programs. He developed a scholarship program that helped coaches in their recruiting efforts. Asbury won 11 KIAC Championships and eight more KIAC Tournament Championships during his time. Also had eight NAIA Scholar Teams, seven All-Americans and 16 NAIA Scholar Athletes.
Dorothy Kempf - Served as the swimming and diving coach from 2006-2011. She was named the NAIA Women's Swimming Coach of the Year in 2008. Kempf coached three NAIA national champions. Her men's teams wom the 2008 and 2009 Applachian Swim Conference titles and the women's teams won the 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 ASC titles. She was the ASC Men's Coach of the Year in 2008 and 2009 and the ASC Women's Coach of the Year in 2009, 2010 and 2011.
The 2012 Class:
Tim Glenn '95 - First 1,000 point scorer in school history and member of first men's varsity basketball team in 1991. Currently holds school record with 51 points in a game, set on February 23, 1995 against Campbellsville. Also holds records for single-season schoring average at 27.6 ppg in the 1994-95 season and the single-season free throw percentage mark at 91.4 percent in 1992-93. Currently sits seventh on the all-time scoring list with 1,442 points.
Jack Hazen '62 - Coached at Malone University for over 45 years, leading the cross country and track and field teams during his time. Won the school's first ever national championship in 1972 with the men's cross country team. Hazen has led the Pioneers to four national championships overall. The men's cross country team is recognized as the all-time winningest program in the NAIA. In addition to Malone, Hazen has been an assistant coach for USA Track and Field during the 2012 Olympics. He coached the U.S. men's cross country team at the World Championships in 1992 (Boston, Ma.) and 1996 (Cape Town, South Africa). He coched the 2005 World Outdoor Championships USA Team in 2005 and was the head manager for the 1999 U.S. Junior Pan American team.
The 2015 Class:
Alan Smith '64 - Member of the NAIA and Trevecca Nazarene Hall of Fames for his contributions to athletics as a tennis coach and his time as an administrator. Founding member of the TransSouth Conference. Coached Asbury soccer in inaugural club season of 1971. Coached team to a 7-1-1 record in first and only season. Founder of Asbury Tennis.
Kerry Hancock-Sherer '07 - Asbury's first-ever National Champion, regardless of sport. 2007 NAIA National Champion in 200 Butterfly. Four-time NAIA All-American. Currently Asbury record holder in three events (400 IM, 200 Butterfly, 500 Free). 2006-07 NAIA Scholar Athlete Award.
Steve Bodden '84 - 2nd leading goal scorer in Asbury Soccer history (43 career goals), 3rd leading point scorer in Asbury Soccer history (93 career points), Helped Asbury to a 41-29-2 record in four seasons
The 2016 Class:
Miranda Wiley '11 - Asbury women's soccer All-Time leading scorer with 70 goals, 23 assists, and 163 points. Two-time Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year and four-time All-Conference selection. Two-time NAIA Honorable Mention All-American and two-time NCCAA All-American.
Matt Hood '11 - Asbury's second National Champion. 2008 NAIA National Champion in the 200 Free and current record holder in that event with his National Championship time of 1:40.91. Two-time NAIA First Team All-American and one-time NAIA Honorable Mention All-American.
Kevin Moulton - Asbury Athletics' number 1 fan. The most recognizable face at Asbury University home events and a dedicated fan of Asbury Athletics, especially Asbury basketball, for many years.
Holly Sheilley '94 - Received Asbury's Gamble-Walker Award as a senior for the top graduating senior in athletics and academics while participating in volleyball, basketball, and softball for Asbury College. Led softball team in hits, doubles, triples, homeruns, RBIs and batting average her junior season and hit .543 as a sophomore. Four-time coach of the year during stints as the head volleyball and softball coach at Lindsey Wilson College from 1996-2001. Also became just the third female Athletic Director in the State of Kentucky when hired in the role at Transylvania.
Susan Sutlive '78 Smith - All-time leading goal scorer for Asbury field hockey at the end of career. She led her team in goals scored in both seasons of her two-year career with a total of 25 goals. Later went on to become the head coach of the Asbury field hockey team for nine seasons and collected marquee wins during that time over current NCAA Division I teams. Was named the Kentucky Women's Intercollegiate Conference (KWIC) coach of the year in 1986.
