About Asbury Team Physician

The Asbury Athletic Training Staff is supplemented by team physician, Owen McGonigle, M.D., in conjunction with Bluegrass Orthopaedics.

Dr. Owen McGonigle was born and raised in a suburb of Boston, MA. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Notre Dame. After graduation, he returned to Boston where he earned his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine in 2010 and then completed his five year orthopedic residency through the Tufts Affiliated Orthopaedic Residency Program in 2015.

During his time in residency he developed a passion for sports medicine and treating athletes of all ages. After completing residency, Dr. McGonigle elected to proceed with further education as a sports medicine physician and traveled to Birmingham, AL for advanced training in arthroscopic reconstructive procedures and sports medicine at the American Sports Medical Institute. While there, he had the opportunity to learn under some of the foremost leaders in the field. In his free time, Dr. McGonigle enjoys playing tennis and spending time with his wife and four children.

Bluegrass Orthopaedics will provide Asbury Athletics with full-time athletic trainers, orthopaedic physician coverage, access to sub-specialists, and support to expand Asbury's sports medicine program. BGO's convenient locations throughout central Kentucky, along with its investments in technology and highly-trained medical professionals, will allow for further investment across the AU campus community.

Asbury joins an expanding list of universities (2), high schools (6), athletic clubs, organizations, and multiple professional sporting events who utilize BGO's sports medicine services.

In addition, BGO has committed to assisting in the academic growth of AU students pursuing careers in sports medicine and related medical fields. Bluegrass Orthopaedics will create new experiential academic opportunities at its local clinics and offices, including but not limited to internships, job shadowing, and observation time.

"Our sports medicine outreach program has continued to grow, striving to provide top-notch healthcare coverage accessible directly on campus," Cory Brown, BGO Director of Sports Medicine, shared. "We are excited by the opportunity to serve the student-athletes and community of Asbury University and welcome them into our family. The team approach to our sports medicine program is vital for its success — we utilize not only our athletic trainers, but also our sub-specialty trained physicians, physician assistants, physical therapists, and hand specialists."

"Our team could not be more excited about the partnership between Asbury University and our Sports Medicine Program at Bluegrass Orthopaedics," Dean Hanlon, BGO Senior Vice President said. "Our physicians, led by sports medicine specialist Dr. Owen McGonigle, collaborate closely with our athletic trainers to provide preventative services, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions. We look forward to partnering with Asbury University to help care for their student-athletes and the entire campus community."

"Asbury University is grateful to establish this new partnership with Bluegrass Orthopaedics," Mark Whitworth, Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics & University Communications, said. "The BGO team expressed a strong and comprehensive vision for providing sports medicine services for the 350 student-athletes at AU. This is an important step in the continued growth and development of TeamAU.
