LOUISVILLE, Ky. --- The Eagle Cross Country teams joined over 2,400 runners representing 140 colleges and universities on Saturday at the Live in Lou Cross Country Classic held at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park in Louisville. With ideal weather, a flat course, and more than 5000 spectators in attendance, many of the Eagles flew to their best times of the season and new career bests for seven runners on the team.
The competing teams were divided into three divisions. Asbury lined up in the Silver race with about 50 other schools. In the men's 8K race,
Will Durrance recorded a new career best on 25:56.2, an average of 5:13 per mile for the five mile race. It moved him to 3
rd place on the Asbury All-Time list, and was good for 16
th place out of the 412 competitors. He was followed across the finish line by
Wes Preston (season best 26:54.6),
Davis Brown (career best 27:39.7),
Tyler Chong (career best 28:52.6), and
Jacob Seawright (career best 29:02.2) in the scoring positions. Also achieving career bests were
Luke Wheatley (29:06.2),
Owen Vick (30:27.6), and
Luke Holton (30:38.0).
"The guys were fantastic today" said Eagles coach
Randy Crist, "Tyler was the biggest suprise. He's been working hard, but a race like he had today was totally out of the blue! Will ran great again, and he finished a step ahead of the Hanover runner who out leaned him in our meet a couple weeks ago, so that was sweet."
The men's team finished 27
th out of the 45 scoring teams and 54 schools competing in their division.
The women's team was one place better than the men's finish, coming in 26
th out of 40 scoring teams and 52 schools represented in the Silver race.
Carolina Trumpower recorded her second fastest 5K time as an Eagle getting 12
th place out of 356 runners in 19:09.2. Joining her as scorers were
Ava Miller (20:26.5),
Katherine Stanley (21:47.8),
Sarah Yost (22:33.9), and
Della Nevitt (22:46.0). The combined time of the five scorers easily surpassed the qualifying standard needed by the team to qualify for the NCCAA National Championship meet for the second straight year.Â
"The ladies were excited to get the NCCAA qualifier", said Coach Crist, "They missed it by one single second in our last competition, but I was pretty sure they would take care of business today."
