Five New School-Records Set; Four Qualify for NCCAA Nationals at Landon Bond Classic

STORY - THE ESSENTIALS
BEREA, Ky.--- The Asbury men's and women's track & field teams traveled to Berea College to compete in the Landon Bond Classic on Saturday afternoon, the men's team claimed tied for third, while the women finished fifth. AU had five school-records broken and four qualifications to the National Christian College Athletics Association (NCCAA) National Championships.

  • Dan Kersey won the 3000 meter Steeplechase and qualified for NCCAA Nationals with a 10:24.95 time.
  • The men's 4 x 100 meter Relay set a new school record, taking over 2 seconds off of the mark set two years ago at a 43.80 clip ran by Caleb Payne, Jacob Edmonds, Both Mony, and Emmanuel Dut.
  • Bailey Gassmann won both the 1500 and 5000 meter races with times of 5:02.10 and 18:59.96.
  • Maggie Higdon ran 16.46 in the 100 meter hurdles, breaking Beth Crist's school record set in 2012, and also bettering the hand-held Asbury best time ever run by Mary Corbitt in 1979. Higdon qualified for NCCAA Nationals. 
  • Emmanuel Dut won the 400 with a 50.10 time.
  • Emma Groff set a new school record of 2.60 meters in the Pole Vault, breaking the mark of Allison Rehner set in 2011.
  • Caleb Cablish won the Javelin Throw at 47.15m, coming from behind on his final throw of the competition. He bettered his own school record set the week before at the Georgia Southern Invite. He also threw the discus 39.34 meters to qualify for the NCCAA Nationals in that event.
  • Brendan Funke set a new school record in the Hammer Throw with a 31.68m mark, bettering the mark thrown by Paul Liao in 2019.  He also qualified for NCCAA Nationals in the Shot Put at 14.85m.
  • August Price bettered her own school record in the Hammer Throw at a 32.17m mark.
  • One of the most fun events contested was the Mixed (co-ed) 4 x 400 Relay, Asbury finishing eighth with a time of 4:05.24 ran by Wes Preston, Caroline Preston, Jason Flaming, and Adyson Mattingly.
