CEDARVILLE, Ohio.--- Asbury track & field junior media communication major
Brendan Funke led the way in more AU school-records during the third indoor meet of the season for the Eagles on Friday in Cedarville, Ohio, at the Cedarville Indoor Invite.
The meet welcomed 18 competing teams, but the competition was unscored from a team standpoint so there we no final team standings in the last indoor competition of the season for AU before the National Christian College Athletics Association (NCCAA) National Championship at Cedarville.
Funke smashed his own previous indoor records with a heave of 14.12 meters (46' 4") in the 16 lb. Shot Put event and spun his way to a huge new personal best in the 35 lb. Weight Throw of 13.43 meters (44' 1"). His effort with the Weight qualified him for the NCCAA National Championship on February 7th and 8th in that event. Funke had previously met the qualifying standard in the Shot, and now ranks 7
th in the country for the Shot and 12
th in the Weight in the latest NCCAA rankings.
Asbury newcomers
Austin Moreland and
Ambria Mack were both disappointed with their specialty 60 meter hurdle races but then turned that into school record-breaking performances in both the 200 meter dash and the 4x200 meter relay events. Moreland was joined in his relay by Jacob Edwards,
Both Mony, and
Caleb Payne. Mack combined forces with
Mikayla Riccio,
Brihanna Basil, and
Kallee Cooper in her record relay.
NCCAA All-American
Bailey Gassmann stepped down in distance from her usual longer races but enjoyed similar results in the 800 meters (half-mile) event, trimming the school record to 2:23.7. Mikayla Ruccio added a couple of inched to the record she had set just the week before, clearing the High Jump crossbar at a height of 1.57 meters (5' 2").
Freshman art and design major
Cosette Meloon flew off the takeoff board in the Long Jump and did not land in the sand until she had set a new school best of 4.14 meters. Sophomore
August Price had a break-through performance in the 20 lb. Weight Throw with a toss of exactly 10 meters, adding over two feet to her record in that event.
The Eagles also had a new school standard set in the Triple Jump as
Cameron McElroy became the first Asbury studnet-athlete for this young program to ever contest the event in indoor competition.

"This meet was a great final tune-up for us heading into the NCCAA Championship competition next week. Brendan was amazing. The Weight Throw is just an indoor event, similar to the Hammer Throw in outdoor track & field. The spins are very technical, especially while trying to control a 35-pound object! Our throws coach, Don Harris, as done a great job with all of our throwers."
