TERRE HAUTE, In.--- Sophomore
Riley McChord produced 20 digs in back-to-back matches on Friday as Asbury volleyball (5-7) competed in their opening matches of the Rose-Hulman Invitational in Terre Haute, In.
AU dropped the first afternoon match against Anderson, 0-3, and then went five sets with Rose-Hulman in the evening before slipping in the final set, 2-3.
McChord's 40 digs are her most in a two-game sequence this season and takes her game total of 20-plus digs to four.
Emma Grace Gray and
Megan Walden led AU in hitting in both contests, each having double-digits in both matches while combining for 51 kills together on the day.
AU freshman
Lauran Barber tallied 12 digs in each of the two matches, taking her to four 12-dig games in her first season as an Eagle.
Macie Pack had a season-high four blocks for AU against Rose-Hulman.
Lucy Kate Gray had 60 assists on the day with 30 in each match, she also had 13 digs against Rose-Hulman for her second most in 2023.
Game One | ASBURY 0, ANDERSON 3
Anderson started out strong, scoring the first five points of the match. After back-and-forth play took the match to 11-7 Anderson, the Ravens took a nine-point swing that led to a 25-18 win.
In the second set a
Emma Grace Gray kill and
Riley McChord ace tied things at 6-6. Anderson scored the next six points to go ahead 12-6 with three kills and an ace. Asbury climbed all the way back to 23-24 after back-to-back kills from Gray and
Sidney Haysley. Anderson survived the comeback with a final kill to go ahead 2-0 in the match.
Two kills from
McKenna Rumage helped lead Asbury to an early 10-8 lead. For the second consecutive set the Eagles scored two consecutive points to get within one at 23-24 before Anderson scored the final point to sweep the match.
Game Two | ASBURY 2 , ROSE-HULMAN 3
After trailing 15-18 in the first set, AU roared back with kills from
Megan Walden and
McKenna Rumage to take the 25-22 win. Rose-Hulman scored the first seven points of the second set that led into a 25-15 win to tie things at 1-1.
The third set was back-and-forth all the way until Asbury was down 20-22 and scored five of the next four points off McKenna Rummage,
Emma Grace Gray, and
Sidney Haysley kills to win 25-20. Rose-Hulman once again responded strongly, this time with a 25-12 win over AU to knot the score at 2-2.
In the deciding set Asbury led 5-4 before Rose-Hulman scored five straight to power a 15-7 win.
Asbury moves to 5-7 on the season after the two challenging matches on Friday night to open the Invitational.
