WILMORE, Ky. --- Asbury women's basketball hosted Alice Lloyd College this evening for their home opener of the 2022 season. Sophomore Guard,
Haleigh Releford helped lead AU to a nail-biting win over ALC with 20 points and nine rebounds. The Eagles claimed their fourth win in a row and ended ALC's six-game winning streak.
Trinity Shearer and
Jaclynn Ruble both followed behind Releford with 12 points each. Shearer tallied three rebounds for the night and went 6-7 from the charity stripe. Ruble led AU with four assists, as well as racking four rebounds, three steals, and going 4-4 for FT's in her return to action after missing three games.
Asbury began the game with a strong seven point lead over ALC, 9-2. AU held their lead for majority of the first period, until ALC rebounded on an offensive push and went up 20-15 over the Eagles to end the first period.
The margin between each team shrunk in the second period, as ALC and Asbury began going shot-for-shot.
Jaclynn Ruble helped keep the game close with eight points in the second and went 2-2 for FT's. AU took advantage of ALC's repetitive turnovers in the second and scored almost half of their points from turnovers in the quarter. The teams went into the half tied at 37.
The third quarter became a repeat of the second and both teams continued to fight for the lead with neither going above a five point lead. Asbury going 6-6 for FT's in the quarter helped them secure a one point lead over Alice Lloyd to end the third, 56-55.
Coach
Chad Mayes making a tactical defensive switch ultimately aided the Eagles in holding their lead over ALC for the rest of the game.
Camryn Preston, sophomore forward for Asbury hit two keys layups to give AU a three point lead over ALC in the fourth.
Spencer Harvey tallied two more FT's and
Emma Strunk hit a layup to secure an eight point lead over ALC with just minutes remaining.
Despite a late push from ALC with pressure defense, Asbury managed to hold on to take down a strong Alice Lloyd team to move to 4-2 on the season.

"I'm so proud of this team. I'm also so happy for them. We shot the ball a little better tonight, so that helped. What was really impressive to me was two things though. The first, this is our fourth game in seven days! All wins... These young ladies are tired and need a break, so these two days off for Thanksgiving come at a perfect time. Any, if not all, the mistakes we made late in the game came from us being tired and that will benefit us later in the season. Second is the fact that I changed our defensive scheme towards the end of the third quarter and I feel like that was the difference in the game. We have never practiced the change we made, but the team executed it perfectly."
- Head Coach, Chad Mayes | Women's Basketball

The Eagles will have a short break for the holiday and will be back on the road on Friday to play Georgetown at 3 PM.
