Asbury's Winning Streak Snapped, Fall to #18 Georgetown

STORY - THE ESSENTIALS
CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.--- Junior Trinity Shearer scored a season-high 21 points as Asbury fell on Friday afternoon to #18 Georgetown College in the Julie Costello Classic at Thomas More University. Asbury had won their previous four games and led Georgetown at half but fell to the ranked Tigers 60-70.

Shearer added two rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block to her stat line as well. Haleigh Releford, the sophomore guard posted her first career double-double for Asbury with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Abigail Harris was the third leading scorer for Asbury with eight points and collected four rebounds.

Izzy Lamparty and Erin Toller led the way for Georgetown scoring 14 and 13 points. Georgetown had ten different players score in the game, just above Asbury's eight scorers.

Both teams shot under 40% from the field with Asbury shooting 36.4% at 24 made field goals and Georgetown making 25 shots at 36.8%. Asbury made five three's compared to Georgetown's two. The key difference was at the free-throw line with Georgetown doubling Asbury's attempts making 18-25 compared to AU's 7-12.

Asbury continued their streak of turning their opponent over in the double-digits every game this season, but were also turned over 13 times by Georgetown.

In a game that saw 15 lead changes the first quarter was tight from the beginning, Asbury took an early 9-5 lead powered by a Tiffany Riley three and Trinity Shearer layup. Georgetown finished the back and forth quarter with a buzzer-beating layup to give them the 17-16 lead after one.

Asbury's top-scoring quarter was the second as Haleigh Releford took over going 4-6 for eight points with an assist to lead Asbury to a 33-32 lead over #18 Georgetown heading into the half.

Georgetown responded to Asbury's second quarter offense by dropping their most offensive quarter in the third with 20 points, led by Erin Toller with seven. Trinity Shearer was key in keeping Asbury in the game with nine points in the quarter and a steal. AU trailed by five, 47-52 going into the fourth.

Shearer made a layup with nine minutes to go in the game to cut the Asbury deficit to 51-53. From that point Georgetown went on the largest run of the game for ten straight points that gave them a 63-51 lead.

This distance proved to be too much to recover from as Asbury fell for their first time in five games, 60-70.

STORY - QUOTE
"What an amazing effort these ladies put in today. I'm so proud of them. Georgetown is a tremendous team and ranked in the Top 20 nationally, we gave ourselves a chance to win. We won't back down from any challenge. That's what I love about this team.

I needed to make a couple more adjustments in order for us to get this win, so I take full responsibility for the loss. The girls gave the effort to win, I just needed to make a few more changes next time to get us to the end. They are always eager to get back at it, so we will take a couple days off and then get ready for our next challenge."
