WILMORE, Ky. -- The Asbury University women's basketball team recorded its first victory of the new year on Saturday afternoon at home over Ohio Christian 78-76 in River States Conference (RSC) action.
Asbury improves to 4-12 on the season and also win their first conference game of the year.
A 6-1 run for the Eagles following a Kelsey Johnson three-point field goal gave Asbury a 17-12 lead. The Eagles were unable to maintain the lead after OCU ended the quarter on a 14-7 run to lead 26-22.
Late in the second period, the Trailblazers extended their lead out to 42-33.
However, Asbury would re-group and ended the quarter on a 9-0 run to tie up the contest at 42-42 heading into halftime.
In the second half, the Eagles went on a quick 7-2 spurt to re-gain the lead at 53-46.
AU remained out in front by six at 59-53 late in the quarter, but held just a 59-58 lead moving into the fourth quarter.
In the final period, the contest was tied up again at 73-73 with under three minutes to play.
A basket by Sarah King followed by two made free throws from Ashlee Rose put the Eagles ahead by four with just over a minute left.
OCU had a final opportunity at the buzzer, but missed a three point attempt from the left wing at the horn.
The Eagles shot 31 percent from the floor in the win. Asbury dominated the glass on both ends of the floor, out-rebounding the Trailblazers 53-37.
Kelsey Johnson, who scored a career-high 21 points on Thursday against IU East, set a new career mark as she led AU with 25 points. Johnson also finished with nine rebounds and three steals.
Sarah Dennison posted a double-double with 12 points and a career-high 13 rebounds and a team-high four assists.
Ashlee Rose also reached a career-high on Saturday with 17 points. Rose also recorded seven rebounds.
Sarah King scored nine points in the second half and tallied six rebounds.
Asbury is back in action on the road at Alice Lloyd on Thursday at 5:30 PM.
