WILMORE, Ky. -- The Asbury University women's basketball team fell 110-107 in double overtime in a thrilling River States Conference (RSC) matchup at the Luce Center on Saturday afternoon.
Despite the loss, the Eagles put forth a valiant effort, as Autumn Herriford led all scorers with a career-high 34 points.
Herriford was nearly perfect from the foul line at 13-14 shooting.
The Lexington, Ky. native also collected eight rebounds and dished out four assists.
Sarah King collected 22 points and dished out a team-high six assists.
Sarah Dennison finished with 18 points, six rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and two steals.
Aime Conley registered 12 points and six rebounds, while Kelsey Johnson posted 10 points and nine rebounds.
AU shot 45 percent from three-point territory and a season-high 91 percent from the foul line on 31-34 shooting.
In the opening quarter, the Eagles got off to a fast start offensively.
Sarah King provided six points right from the start to push AU ahead 9-5. Asbury carried that momentum with them throughout the remainder of the quarter as they led 23-20 after the opening period.
Back-to-back three-pointers from King and Sarah Dennison pushed AU ahead 29-23.
A 7-3 run after a bucket from Autumn Herriford pushed Asbury ahead by double digits at 36-26.
Midway would end the quarter on a strong note and were able to cut the Eagles' lead down to just four at halftime at 42-38.
In the second half, Asbury took advantage of their size and physical strength down low in the paint and led 50-40 early on.
Midway closed the gap again down to six, but Asbury would stay hot offensively as they refused to give up the advantage.
The Eagles out-scored MU in the third quarter and led 63-55 heading into the final period.
The fourth period provided chaos between the two squads as the lead went back and forth numerous times.
Asbury was in control early on, but were outscored 28-20 in the quarter as Midway was hot from behind the arc.
Asbury led 83-80 with under 10 seconds to play, but Midway drilled a three from the top of the key with under to force overtime.
In a highly entertaining overtime period, the Eagles boasted a lead for a majority of the five minutes. AU held a 97-93 advantage with just over a minute to play.
Midway would even things up at 97 after hitting four free throws in the final minute.
At the end of the first OT, AU had an opportunity to win, but a game-winning three-pointer fell just short.
In the second overtime period, the Eagles never led in the period as Midway out-scored the Eagles 13-10 to win the contest 110-107.
Asbury will be back in action on Tuesday at No. 25 Rio Grande.
