Angie Dean enters her first season as head coach of the Asbury University softball program for 2017-18.
Dean comes to Asbury after spending 19 seasons as head coach for the University of the Cumberlands Patriots. Dean is fresh off a Mid-South Conference Championship with the Patriots, advancing on to the NAIA National Tournament after posting a 19-34 record during the regular season and leading her team to three straight wins over top-10 ranked teams during conference championship play.
"Coach Dean brings a great deal of wisdom and experience to AU Softball. We feel very fortunate to have her," Perdue said of the hire.
During her years at UC, Coach Dean stayed heavily involved in the conference serving as a softball chairman for seven years and was also as a Region 11 rater for three years. She recorded 407 career wins with the Patriots.
Before being named head coach at Cumberlands, Dean was the assistant coach under Julie Hill for two seasons at the Cumberlands. Prior to that, Dean helped coach both volleyball and softball at Maryville High School in Maryville, TN.
She graduated from Cumberland College (now Cumberlands) in 1990 with a degree in Secondary Education. Dean had a stellar career as a player for Cumberlands.
Though known for her outstanding defensive skills, Dean averaged .384 from the plate. During her four year tenure, her teams overall record was 97-40. She was named All-KWIC (Kentucky Women's Intercollegiate Conference) in '87-'89 and All-KIAC (Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) in 1998. The 1989 32-4 team, Dean's senior season, was named KIAC and KWIC champions.
Coach Dean gives all her effort to building the skills and confidence of her young team, she stresses to them the importance of education.
