Payne Paces Eagles as Records Fall at Mount St. Joseph Invitational

STORY - THE ESSENTIALS
CINCINNATI, Oh. — The Asbury track & field teams turned in an impressive performance Saturday at the Mount St. Joseph Invitational. The Eagle men finished fourth out of 10 teams, while the women placed sixth among nine teams.

The highlight of the day came in the 60-meter dash, where sophomore Caleb Payne broke his own school record, clocking a 6.99 to finish second overall. Payne was the top collegiate finisher in the race, finishing just behind an Olympian from Haiti.

The Eagles' distance runners shined on the women's side, led by the duo of Bailey Gassmann and Brooke O'Carroll. The pair went one-two in the mile run, with Gassmann taking first and O'Carroll close behind in second.

O'Carroll returned to the track later in the meet to win the 800 meters in a time of 2:30.1, a performance that qualified her for the NCCAA National Championships. Gassmann capped the day by dominating the 3,000-meter run, earning another convincing victory.

Asbury continued to rewrite the record books in the field events. Jeremy Jordan cleared 1.80 meters (5'11") in the high jump, setting a new Asbury indoor record and earning qualification for the National Christian College Athletics Association (NCCAA) National Championship meet. Nathan Haglund also added to his standout season, improving his own school record in the triple jump with a mark of 11.64 meters.

STORY - QUOTE
"We had a lot of our athletes set new personal records, so that usually puts a smile on their face. Indoor nationals are next week and we have ended up with about 12 guys and 10 of the ladies who have qualified to compete. We've had a pretty good indoor season and I'm anxious to see how we stack up against some of the best athletes from across the country."
Randy Crist | Head Track and Field Coach
