Asbury Honors the Life of Former AU Athletics Chair and NCCAA Executive Director Dr. Barry May
WILMORE, Ky. --- Asbury University Athletics honors the life of former Asbury Department Chair of HPERA (Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Athletics) from 1996-2007, and National Christian College Athletics Association (NCCAA) Executive Director (1989-98), who passed away on Monday, February 10, 2025, at his home surrounded by loving family.
"On behalf of all TeamAU, I want to express our deepest condolences on the passing of Dr. Barry May," said Asbury Assistant Athletics Director and Men's Soccer Head Coach, Ben Andrews. "Dr. May was full of wisdom and deep care for the students and athletes he worked with day in and day out. His leadership and kindness were experienced by those around him."
Dr. May not only had tremendous impact on Asbury Athletics and the NCCAA, but was mostly importantly known for his love of Jesus Christ and impact for the Kingdom of God.
"Dr. Barry May helped guide the NCCAA into its fourth decade of service to Christian higher education and did so with excellence and purpose," said NCCAA Executive Director, Dan Wood. "His humility, combined with his wisdom and knowledge of the university structure, led to the NCCAA increasing its presence and voice with relationships with the NCAA and NAIA."
Outside of his professional roles, Dr. May was very active and dedicated in his communities. He served on the board at College Wesleyan Church, taught a 5th-grade Sunday school class, and was a devoted member of the Free Methodist Church, where he was on the finance team.
