Asbury Celebrates McNew and Winter on Senior Night; Clipped by No. 1 in CCS Maryville


STORY - THE ESSENTIALS
WILMORE, Ky.--- Asbury men's basketball (7-15, 3-7 CCS) sophomore pre-medicine major Scott Shepherd scored a career-high 18 points on Wednesday night in the Luce Center against the No. 1 team in the Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS), but Maryville College (18-5, 9-1 CCS) took the 89-70 win over AU. 

Asbury celebrated senior night prior to the game, honoring sport management major from Nicholasville, Ky., Ben McNew, and graduate student from Wilmore, Ky., Clayton Winter. McNew scored his 1,000th career point on a made three-pointer during the game, joining his teammate Winter on the Asbury 1,000 Point Club. 

Shepherd went 5-10 from the field with three made threes and shot 5-6 from the free-throw line. The 6'4" forward is the reigning Asbury BGO Athlete of the Week, and has now scored 42 points in his last three games. 

Aden Slone was second in scoring for Asbury with 11, tying his most threes in a game this season with three. Clayton Winter grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds alongside eight points and two assists.

The Eagles trailed 42-21 at the break but outscored Maryville 49-47 in the second half. The Scots capitalized on AU turnovers, scoring 19 points off giveaways in the game. 

Maryville also excelled in paint-scoring, leading Asbury 42-24 in paint points. The Scots out-rebounded AU 40-30 and dished 17 assists while Asbury dished 12 assists. 

Reed Kemp scored 30 points for Maryville, the leading scorer in the CCS at 24.6 points per game. Asbury knocked down nine threes while Maryville made 10 of their own. 

The Scots shot 49 percent from the field and went 13-15 from the line while Asbury finished the game at 36 percent from the field and shot 17-22 from the stripe. 

The Eagles sit at fifth place in the CCS out of seven teams.
