Asbury Suffers First CCS Loss; Fall in Five-Set Thriller to Maryville

STORY - THE ESSENTIALS
WILMORE, Ky. --- The Asbury volleyball team (9-7, 5-1 CCS) suffered its first Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) defeat of the 2025 season on Wednesday night in Wilmore, Ky., falling to Maryville College in five sets, 3-2. 

Before the match, senior biology pre-nursing major Lucy Kate Gray was honored for reaching 2,000 career assists. She is now third all-time at Asbury with 2,158 assists in 306 total sets played at AU, averaging over seven assists per set in her career as an Eagle.

Asbury also welcomed Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) Commissioner Beth Vansant to mid-court pregame. Commissioner Vansant presented the 2024-25 CCS Commissioner's Cup to AU VP for Athletics, Mark Whitworth


Maryville came out strong with two consecutive 25-21 wins to go ahead 2-0 on the No.1 team in the CCS, Asbury. The Eagles answered with gutsy back-to-back victories in sets three and four, winning 25-17 and 25-20. 

In the fifth set, the Scots used a 7-0 run to distance themselves from Asbury. Maryville won the final set to secure the match, 15-8. 

AU senior marketing major Megan Mateyoke had a season-high 16 kills in the match, followed by Megan Schelling with nine and Sophie Glushchak at eight kills. Senior captain Riley McChord had 27 digs with three aces for the Eagles. 

Senior Sidney Haysley had a season-high 20 digs, while freshman Julia Wright reached a career-high 19 assists. Schelling, Glushchak, and Abigail Bruner each had three blocks for Asbury. 

Both teams had 53 total kills, with Asbury leading the way in aces (10-9), blocks (9-4), assists (48-46), and digs (78-73). 

Maryville's hitting percentage led the night at .191 percent, committing 22 errors compared to Asbury at .178 percent with 24 errors.
