Gray Leads Asbury to 2-0 Start in CCS Play Over LaGrange and Wesleyan


STORY - THE ESSENTIALS
LAGRANGE, Ga.--- Senior elementary education major Emma Grace Gray had 29 kills to power Asbury volleyball (7-4) to a 2-0 start in Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) play over LaGrange (3-2) and Wesleyan (3-0) on Sunday afternoon in LaGrange, Ga.

The Eagles opened the day with a challenging and tightly contested series against LaGrange. Despite falling behind with a third-set loss (25-21) and a decisive fourth-set defeat (25-15), they clawed back in the fifth set, clinching the victory 15-12.

Asbury maintained momentum into the second matchup against Wesleyan (GA), sweeping through all three sets (25-6, 25-14, 25-22). AU went for their highest hitting percentage of the year in the match at .283 with 41 total kills. 

Emma Grace Gray was highlighted as a key player with 29 kills and three aces that shifted momentum in Asbury's favor at vital moments of the game. AU junior media communication major Riley McChord went for 25 digs on the day defensively, as well as four aces in the sweep over Wesleyan.

Freshman Isabelle VandeSchraaf went for 14 kills in game one as well as 10 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. Sisters Lucy Kate Gray (22) and Sara Beth Gray (14)  combined for 40 assists in the opening five-set win over LaGrange. Gray also had four aces against LaGrange. 

Sophie Glushchak produced nine kills for AU in the first match while Amelia Mays had two aces and five digs in game two. Freshman Megan Schelling also had six kills for Asbury against Wesleyan. 

The Eagles have now won three straight after their win over No. 23 Centre College on Tuesday night and move to 7-4 on the season, as well as holding an undefeated 2-0 start to the CCS schedule. 

AU will host CCS opponent Covenant College (7-9, 2-1 CCS) on Thursday night in the Luce Center for a key home matchup at 5:30 pm.
