Gray and VandeSchraaf Power Asbury to Sweep Covenant, Move to 3-0 in CCS


STORY - THE ESSENTIALS
WILMORE, Ky.--- Emma Grace Gray and Isabelle VandeSchraaf combined for 26 kills on Thursday night in Wilmore, Ky., powering Asbury volleyball (8-4, 3-0 CCS) to a 3-0 sweep over the reigning Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) champions, Covenant College (7-10, 2-2 CCS).

The Eagles edged out the Scots in a tight first set with a score of 25-23. In the second set AU maintained their lead, taking the subsequent sets 25-21 and 25-20, showcasing strong defense and aggressive offense.

Asbury's offense hit for their third highest percentage of the season at .216 offensively. AU outscored Covenant 53-39 overall with 48 kills compared to Covenant's 23. 

Gray, a senior elementary education major, went for 13 kills and nine digs. She now has 42 kills in her last three matches. 

Freshman equine science major Isabelle VandeSchraaf also had 13 kills, but also added 15 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. 

Defense was equally commendable with Sophie Glushchak and Abigail Bruner leading in blocks with two apiece. Junior Riley McChord tied VandeSchraaf for the match-high with 15 digs. 

Freshman Sara Beth Gray tied her career-high in assists with 20 and in digs with seven recorded. Lucy Kate Gray aided the offense with 16 assists. Freshman Megan Schelling also tied her career-high with six kills. 

With this victory, the Eagles pushed their season record to 8-4 overall and a clean 3-0 in the CCS. 

Looking forward, the Eagles are scheduled to face Agnes Scott and Belhaven this Saturday Decatur, Ga., for a CCS Tri-Match on the road.
