WILMORE, Ky.--- The No. 1 seed Asbury volleyball team (21-7, 15-2 CCS) took only their second CCS loss of the season on Friday night in the Semifinal Round of the CCS Volleyball Tournament in Wilmore, Ky., falling in four sets to the No. 5 seed Huntingdon Hawks, 3-1.
The Eagles started the first set trailing, with scores of 25-18 and 25-21 in the first two sets. They bounced back impressively in the third set with a 25-20 win, demonstrating resilience and tactical prowess. However, the fourth set saw the Hawks sealing the match with a 25-21 score.
Asbury freshman exercise science major and CCS Rookie of the Year,
Isabelle VandeSchraaf, had her second most kills in a match this season at a game-high 23 total. She also had a game-high 23 digs for her 15 double-double of the season.
Freshman
Emma Dean led AU with two blocks while
Megan Schelling and
Kaylen Wilson had a block as well. CCS Defensive Player of the Year,
Riley McChord, was strong in the Semifinal matchup as well, added 22 digs for AU alongside two aces.
The CCS Setter of the Year,
Lucy Kate Gray, had 21 assists for the Eagles. Gray was followed by her freshman sister
Sara Beth Gray adding 19 assists.
AU had 54 kills on the night while Huntingdon had 40 total. A key stat was the Hawks holding 19 errors while the Eagles committed 30 errors, their third most in a match this season.
Asbury led in aces as well, producing five compared to the Huntingdon two service aces. The Eagles had 50 assists while Huntingdon was held to 36 assists.
The No. 5 seed Huntingdon moves on the CCS Championship match on Saturday afternoon at 1 pm in the Luce Center against the No. 3 seed Covenant College. The Scots from Covenant took a win over No. 2 Maryville in Wilmore, Ky., earlier in the day.
Asbury completes their opening season in the Collegiate Conference of the South with a 15-2 record, including the CCS Coach of the Year Award going to head coach
Tiffany Horton.
The Eagles will await further updates for their postseason opportunities out of the NCAA or National Christian College Athletics Association (NCCAA).
