Asbury Clipped by Ohio Christian in NCCAA Semis; Glushchak Career-High


STORY - THE ESSENTIALS
WILMORE, Ky.--- Asbury volleyball (21-8, 15-1 CCS) freshman accounting major Sophie Glushchak had a career-high 18 kills on Thursday night in Wilmore, Ky., but AU was clipped by Ohio Christian University (16-17) in the National Christian College Athletics Association (NCCAA) Mideast Region Semifinals, 3-2. 

The match opened with a tightly contested first set where the Eagles faced a setback, losing 28-26. However, Asbury quickly rebounded, showcasing their resilience by clinching victories in the second and third sets with scores of 25-19 and 25-20, respectively. Momentum shifted in the fourth set as Ohio Christian fought back, taking the set 25-16, and continued their surge into the final set, winning 15-9.

Glushchak's 18 kills were eight more than her previous best, hitting at .333 percent on the night. She only had four errors out of 42 attempts, taking her team-high hitting percentage among AU hitters on the year to .224 percent. 

Asbury committed a season-high 36 errors in the match, while Ohio Christian had 23 errors. The Eagles had 61 kills and held the Trailblazers to 49 kills. 

Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) Rookie of the Year Isabelle VandeSchraaf had 17 kills and 23 digs, marking her with 16 double-doubles on the year. She also had four aces for a game-high. Asbury freshman Kaylen Wilson also had a career-high, collecting 15 kills in the match. 

AU junior communications major and business minor Riley McChord had season-high's in digs with 26 and assists with nine on the night. The CCS Defensive Player of the Year now has 454 digs on the year at 4.32 per set. 

Freshman Abigail Bruner had three blocks, while sophomore Lauran Barber had 13 digs defensively for Asbury. Lucy Kate Gray had 27 assists for the Eagles, followed by Sarah Beth Gray with 17 assists. 

The Eagles' current record stands at 21-8 overall. The NCCAA Mideast Region Championship will be played in the Luce Center Friday afternoon at 2 pm between Ohio Christian University and the No. 1 Seed, Lancaster Bible College.
