Asbury Takes Fifth Straight Sweep with Win at Maryville to Claim 6-0 in CCS


STORY - THE ESSENTIALS
MARYVILLE, Tn.--- The Asbury volleyball team (11-4, 6-0 CCS) took their sixth straight sweep and seventh consecutive win on Tuesday night at Maryville College (11-7, 4-2 CCS), in Maryville, Tn., to move to 6-0 in the Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) and 11-4 on the year. 

Asbury has now won 19 of their last 21 sets and have not lost a set since September 29th. 

The Eagles continued their recent success from the start of the match, taking all three sets with scores of 25-19, 25-20, and 25-22 respectively. AU used eight aces in the match and held Maryville to one ace. 

The reigning CCS Rookie of the Week and National Christian College Athletics Association (NCCAA) Offensive Player of the Week, Isabelle VandeSchraaf, went for 11 kills, three aces, and four digs on the night. VandeSchraaf leads the CCS and the NCCAA in kills per set on the season, averaging 4.04. 

Junior elementary education major Emma Grace Gray had 10 kills with eight digs, her eight double-digit kill match of the season. Junior biology pre-nursing major Lucy Kate Gray added 16 assists with five digs for the Eagles as well. 

The defensive efforts were equally strong, with Abigail Bruner (3), Sophie Glushchak (2), and Megan Schelling (2) stepping up with critical blocks that kept the Scots at bay. Rile McChord was strong defensively for AU with 15 digs and also added three assists. 

Serving stood out as a strong point for Asbury; the trio of VandeSchraaf (3), E. Gray (2), and Bruner (2) combining for seven aces. Freshman Sara Beth Gray also dished 14 assists for AU. 

Looking ahead, the Eagles are set to continue their campaign with two home matches on Saturday in Wilmore, Ky., against Huntingdon College and Piedmont University at 12 and 4 pm.
