Asbury Reverse Sweeps Maryville to Secure CCS Regular Season Title


STORY - THE ESSENTIALS
WILMORE, Ky.--- Asbury volleyball (18-6, 13-1 CCS) clinched the Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) Regular Season Title on Tuesday night in Wilmore with a 3-1 reverse sweep win over the Maryville Scots (18-8, 11-3 CCS).

The Eagles lost the first set narrowly by 26-24, but made a strong comeback in the subsequent sets. They secured the second, third, and fourth sets with scores of 25-12, 25-13, and 25-15 to solidify their spot as the CCS Tournament No. 1 Seed and the tournament's semifinals and finals host in Wilmore on Nov. 15 and 16. 

AU hit .370 in the second set, .286 in the second, and .233 in the third for 30 kills combined in the final three sets. The Eagles hit for an overall percentage of .226, their seventh highest of the season after an opening set at .073 percent. 

Asbury produced nine blocks compared to the Maryville one block on the night. AU also had seven aces and allowed four to Maryville. 

Top performers for the Eagles were CCS Rookie of the Week Isabelle VandeSchraaf, who led with 12 kills, junior Sidney Haysley with 10 kills (season-high), and freshman Abigail Bruner tallying seven kills. Bruner and her freshman teammate Megan Schelling had four blocks apiece to hold Maryville's offense. 

Junior Riley McChord was honored before the game for reaching 1,000 career digs. She led a game-high 18 digs on the night, trailed behind VandeSchraaf at 16 digs for her 12th double-double. McChord 1,000 digs in her first 67 matches at AU and is top 10 in the CCS at 4.11 digs per set.

Lucy Kate Gray and McChord each secured three aces. Gray also contributed greatly with 22 assists, trailed by Sarah Beth Gray with 14 assists. 

With this win, the Eagles improved their season record to an impressive 19-6 overall and 13-1 in the CCS with a Regular Season Title in their first year in the conference. They look ahead to their next challenge against Huntingdon and Piedmont on Saturday in Montgomery, Al., for their final regular season CCS matchups of the year.
