Gray and McChord Set Season-Highs; Asbury Edged by Hanover in Five Sets


STORY - THE ESSENTIALS
WILMORE, Ky.--- Junior Emma Grace Gray and Sophomore Riley McChord each set season-highs for Asbury volleyball (6-9) on Wednesday night in Wilmore, Ky., as AU was edged by Hanover (11-4) in five sets on their home court. 

Gray's season-high 23 kills led both teams and marks the most kills in a match during her time at Asbury. She also served four aces and produced 12 digs on the night. 

Riley McChord continued her stellar play with a season-high 23 digs to lead both teams, taking her to five straight matches with 20-plus digs. 

Megan Walden was the other Eagle with double-digit kills, having 11 on the night. Lucy Kate Gray had 38 assists with 12 digs. Freshman McKenna Rumage served three aces for Asbury. 

Asbury had more kills than Hanover at 52-50, but the Panthers hit a .228 percentage while AU hit at .152 percent.

Asbury doubled Hanover in aces at 12-6, but again Hanover was more efficient with only 17 errors compared to 27 errors from AU. 

Set-by-Set Recap 

Set One

Asbury went ahead 3-0 to start the match after a Macie Pack kill and Lucy Kate Gray ace. Hanover retaliated to take a 11-10 lead they didn't give up the rest of the set. Hanover took a 25-17 win for the largest point-differential the entire night. 

Set Two
The second set was the closest of the evening, including 13 lead changes throughout. Both teams had multiple three-point and two-point runs during the set, but neither allowed more than. a three-point run. 

After the score tied at 22-22, Sidney Haysley produced a kill and then Emma Grace Gray followed with consecutive kills to give Asbury a 25-23 win, tying things at 1-1.

Set Three
AU had their most comfortable set of the night in the third set, taking a controlling 13-5 lead out of the gate. Hanover made a six-point swing to get within two but AU stretched their lead again, rolling into a 25-18 win over Hanover to go ahead 2-1 in the match. 

 Set Four
For the third straight set Asbury came out ready to play, taking an early 13-12 lead over Hanover after a Macie Pack kill. Hanover answered with a key seven-point run that gave them a 19-13 lead. 

The Panthers used this run to lead into a 25-19 win, tying things at 2-2 to force a deciding set five. 

Set Five
The final and deciding set started out back-and-forth, sitting tied at 7-7 almost halfway through the set. Hanover then scored three straight to take a 10-7 lead they didn't turn back from. 

Hanover went on to score five more points while AU got to 11, taking a 15-11 lead to take the match for their 14th win of the year. 

With the loss on Wednesday Asbury volleyball moves to 6-9 on the 2023 season.
