DANVILLE, Ky. --- For only the third time this season Asbury men's tennis (8-3) came out on the losing end, slipping to Centre College (7-9) on Thursday in a very tight match, 4-5.
After Asbury's
Gregorio Ingles and
Alejandro Caceres took the No. 1 doubles match, Centre roared back for two close doubles match victories to take the elusive doubles point. The Colonels topped
Franco Patino and
Joseph Lewis 6-8 in the No. 2 match, and then won in a tiebreak over
Alejo Britos and
Ignacio Ardiles in the No. 3 match.
AU responded firmly with three consecutive wins in the top three singles matches.
Gregorio Ingles (No. 1) and
Joseph Lewis (No. 2) dominated their singles matches, neither giving up over three points in a set.
Alejandro Caceres went into a tiebreak with Centre in his match after dropping the first set, winning 10-5 to give AU their third straight singles win after dropping the doubles point.
The No. 4 singles match was a deciding competition, with Asbury freshman Igancio Ardiles falling in a close battle that ended in tiebreak, 7-6, 4-6, 9-10.
Franco Patino (No. 5) and Alejo Britus (No. 6) slipped in their matches to Centre, Patino scoring five points in both sets, 5-7, 5-7.
Centre responded to AU winning the first three singles matches by winning the final three, securing the 5-4 win after leading the night off with the doubles point.
For the first time all season Asbury has dropped back-to-back matches, but still sit a strong 8-3 overall.
