WILMORE, Ky.--- Asbury baseball head coach
Manny Cervantes received his 200th career win at AU on Thursday as the Eagles took their win streak to nine, sweeping IUPUC in a doubleheader at Cecil Zweifel Field.
Asbury (15-10) came from behind in both games, defeating IUPUC 14-4 in game one and 12-8 in game two for the second doubleheader sweep over the Crimson Pride in two weeks.
Since March 17, the Eagles have now won nine straight, scored 132 runs, and produced nine straight double-digit hit games. The defense has been firm as well, averaging only 1.7 errors per game.
Sophomore
Quinn Nobles shined offensively, going 5-9 with five RBIs, a double, and his first career home run. Nobles now sits at season numbers of .423 AVG, 1.021 OPS, 30 hits, 23 RBIs, and 14 steals.
Game One | AU 14, IUPUC 4
Kaden Dugle and the Asbury offense struck first in game one, Dugle singling through the infield to score
Andrew Billington, 1-0.
IUPUC answered with two in the second and one in the fourth, all unearned off Asbury starter
David Savastio. The senior righty went four innings with five hits, three unearned runs, and a strikeout.
Bouncing back from the 3-1 deficit Asbury used a nine-run fifth off six hits to take the 10-3 lead they never let up. Three doubles in the inning from
Ethan Cartwright,
Noah Brown, and
Andrew Billington combined for six RBIs in the inning.
Holten Handel pitched the fifth through the seventh with one earned run and two strikeouts to earn his third win of the season. AU scored two in the eighth on three hits to finish the game early, 14-4.
Game Two | AU 12, IUPUC 8
Nathan Van Bibber got the start for IUPUC in game two and gave five innings of scoreless work to start the game. The Crimson Pride offense gave him a run in the first and three in the fourth to go up 4-0 on Asbury.
The AU offense got to Bibber in the sixth, getting to the bullpen to score 10 two-out runs in the inning on six hits to go up 10-4.
Andrew Billington cleared the bases with a double and
Quinn Nobles hit a three-run blast.
Freshman
Jack Morris came out of the bullpen for an inning of scoreless work to secure his first career win.
Cayden Devine went 3.0 innings with five strikeouts in his third career start.
Asbury added two more runs of insurance and secured the 12-8 win for their ninth straight victory. AU moves to 15-10 on the 2023 season.
"I'm humbled and grateful God has given me the opportunity to steward Asbury's baseball program these past nine years. The Lord has blessed the program with many good players, families, coaches, and staff over the years. I'm thankful for the wins and success, but I'm most grateful for allowing us to use the game of baseball to influence young men and others towards the abundant life and hope we have in Jesus. I'm excited to see what God has in store in the future for AU Baseball."
Manny Cervantes | Asbury Baseball Head Coach
"We started off a little sideways, but the team came together and bounced back great. Defensively wasn't our best but our offense picked up where we've been all week."
