WILMORE, Ky.--- Asbury baseball (8-10) jumped back into the win column with two statement wins over MUW (2-10) on Friday afternoon in Wilmore, Ky. The Asbury offense combined for 27 hits on the day to clinch the series on day one.
AU took game one 19-14 with 14 hits, and then scored six late runs in the game two to secure game two at 10-3. Last season Asbury took three of their five games over MUW and started this season's six-game series with two wins.
Junior outfielder
Ethan Cartwright went 5-5 in game one with a double, five RBIs and three runs scored.
Matthew Baker had six RBIs in the day's opener with a grand slam over the right center wall.
Noah Brown and
Matthew Johnson each had three hits in game two, Johnson driving in three and Brown scoring two runs. Freshman
Cayden Devine took advantage of his first career start, producing 7.0 innings of work with one earned run and four hits allowed.
Game One | AU 19, MUW 4
A clean defensive game and strongest offensive showing of the season gave AU the 19-4 win to open up the day. Asbury scored six runs in the bottom of the first to get things going, thanks to a grand slam from
Matthew Baker.
Holten Handel got the start for AU and went four innings with two strikeouts and four earned runs. MUW used three pinch-hit singles in the fourth to score three of their four runs on the game.
Asbury added three runs in the second powered by an
Ethan Cartwright double (5-5 ) to go up 9-1 and then scored six in the third to take a 15-1 advantage.
Out of the 14 hits for AU they used three doubles and a home run, playing small-ball for 11 singles. MUW committed eight errors in the game.
C. Neal led the way offensively for MUW with two hits after entering the game in the fourth.
Colton Perkins gave his second one-inning appearance on the week with no runs allowed.
Game Two | AU 10, MUW 3
Freshman right-hander
Cayden Devine set the tone for AU getting a win in his first career start on the mound.
Jacob Parker came on out of the bullpen in the eighth to get the final six outs for AU, giving up no runs.
Asbury's offense showed up for the second time in the day, going for four doubles this time and 14 hits overall.
Noah Brown,
Matthew Johnson,
Tyler Hewlett,
Andrew Billington, and Both offenses came out in game two ready to play, WSU scoring two in the first followed by Asbury dropping a four spot in the bottom half.
Jackson Cole hit a two-run blast over the left field wall before
Kaden Dugle and
Ethan Cartwright each ended up scoring after singles, giving Asbury a 4-2 lead.
AU broke the 0-0 tie in the fifth with four runs, led by an
Andrew Billington two-RBI double. MUW answered with three unanswered runs including a J. Williams solo shot in the seventh.
A two-out
Matthew Johnson single up the middle that scored two runs gave Asbury a huge needed lift in the bottom of the seventh.
Tyler Hewlett then doubled to move the game to 7-3.
AU added three more runs in the eighth for insurance as the Eagles won game two 10-3 to sweep the day and move to 8--10 on the season.
