Bearden and Johnson Lead Asbury To 8-1 Win over WSU to Clinch Series

STORY - THE ESSENTIALS
WILMORE, Ky.--- Brody Bearden went six innings with no runs allowed in his second start as an Eagle to lead Asbury past Wright State Lake Campus, 8-1. Senior shortstop Matthew Johnson powered the Asbury offense with a career-high four hits as Asbury (6-8) clinched the series over WSU (5-5).

Bearden, the freshman right-hander from Acworth, Ga. had the best start of his young collegiate career, striking out five and allowing only three hits in six innings. Bearden moves to 2-1 on the year with the win.

Johnson's four-hit and two RBI day led the charge for AU's explosive offense that went for 13 hits overall. Johnson finishes the series 7-14 with three RBIs.

Asbury's bullpen handled the final three innings, allowing only two hits and one run. Jacob Parker, Cameron Crick, and Sam Billing kept the Lakers at bay to give Bearden the win.

Sophomore Quinn Nobles had another strong day at the plate, going 3-4 with an RBI, run scored, and two stolen bases. Nathaniel Frank led the Eagles in runs scored, crossing the plate twice with a stolen bag.

AU jumped on the board first with two runs in the first inning, powered by Nathaniel Frank and Quinn Nobles singles. Two more runs came in the third for Asbury, powered by singles from Jackson Cole, Quinn Nobles, and Matthew Johnson

Brody Bearden didn't allow a hit from the WSU offense until the third. Matthew Johnson struck again in the fifth, smacking an RBI single to right field to score Kaden Dugle

Cameron Crick came on on the top of the eighth with two WSU runners on and two outs. A wild pitch scored one Laker making the game 5-1, but Crick struck out two hitters for outs two and three to end the threat.

Asbury scored three more insurance runs in the bottom half off RBIs from Ethan Cartwright and Josh Head

Freshman righty Sam Billington came on in the ninth to close out Asbury's sixth win of the season. After losing game one of the series AU picked up the next two games to win the series over WSU heading into spring break.
