DANVILLE, Ky. --- After competing on Saturday the Asbury Softball team returned to Danville, Ky., to face Centre College and the College of Wooster for the second day in a row.
The Eagles fell to Wooster 4-6 for the second time in a row, and lost to Centre 4-5 in their second game of the day, after beating them the day prior.
Game One (The College of Wooster):
Asbury began their doubleheader by taking on the College of Wooster. AU previously battled Wooster and fell to them 6-0, so they came into todays game looking to produce a different outcome. Despite talented efforts put up by the Eagles, Wooster came out on top again in a closer 6-4 game.
The Eagles began the game by bringing one home in the top of the first.
Kaitlyn Wilson was brought home off a single by
Tori Giurgevich.
AU and the Scots went on to go scoreless for three more innings until Wooster decided to retaliate in the bottom of the fourth with one run. Asbury entered the top of the fifth tied 1-1.
Despite the Eagles getting two on base in the top of the fifth, they were unable to bring anyone home to complete the inning.
Wooster had an explosive fifth inning and brought five people home to make it a 6-1 ball game going into the sixth.
Tori Giurgevich led AU in the top of the sixth and took her walk to first after being hit by a pitch.
Kyla Bell singled to right center to advance Giurgevich to third, to give AU runners on first and third with no outs. After a pitching change from Wooster,
Abigail Fletcher came up and reached on a fielders choice, and brought Giurevich home. Wilson got thrown out at second and the game was 6-2 now.
Kaitlyn Wilson singled to right field to bring in
Abigail Fletcher to bring AU their second run of the inning. AU was not able to bring anyone else home after Fletchers run and ended the inning 6-2, with slight improvement.
Asbury was able to pick up one more run, an unearned by
Taylor Enlow but another RBI for
Tori Giurgevich.
Despite Asbury's late efforts, they were unable to take the victory over Wooster and went into game two, 1-2.
Game Two (Centre College):
During the Eagles' second game, AU was unable to get ahead in the first inning, allowing the Colonels to bring a runner home to set the score 1-0 going into the second inning.
The second inning was scoreless for both opponents, with each team leaving runners on base in scoring position.
The Colonels pushed hard at the bottom of the third, bringing two runners in off of a sacrifice fly and an error by the Eagles' third base, staying ahead of Asbury 3-0.
It was in the fourth inning that AU was able to answer back, scoring four runs to take the 4-3 lead over Centre.
The team was led by captain
Taylor Enlow's single up the middle, which was directly followed by
Tori Giurgevich's single to right field, advancing Enlow to second.
Next was
Kyla Bell with a single to left field, loading the bases.
The Eagles were able to capitalize on their efforts, bringing home
Taylor Enlow on a sacrifice fly.
Freshman KaleyJo Meyers took a sacrifice to advance
Kyla Bell and bring home
Tori Giurgevich for the team's second run.
Asbury was able to bring a third runner home, thanks to
Isabel Rochemont's single to third.
To end their streak with a fourth run,
Isabel Rochemont was able to come home off of an error by the Colonels in center field.
At the bottom of the fourth,
Kaylee Strunk took the mound for starting pitcher Josie Deatherag.
While
Kaylee Strunk was able to throw two consecutive strikeouts, Centre was still able to bring their runner on first base all the way home off of a double to center field.
Throughout the fifth and sixth inning, AU and Centre were unable to score.
In the final inning, the Eagles had to leave the top of the seventh with no runs brought in.
It was in the bottom of the seventh that the Colonels were able to push past the Eagles' defense, bringing in their final run of the game after three hits, a single, a stolen base, and two doubles.
Despite the Eagles' spark in the fourth inning, the Colonels were able to pull through at the very end, bringing Asbury's record to 1-3.
