Serve > Train > Compete Feature I Presented by Kessinger Lee

WILMORE, Ky.— Asbury Athletics is committed to providing student-athletes an opportunity to serve, train, and compete through college athletics for the glory of God. The Kessinger Lee sponsored Serve > Train > Compete Feature aims to highlight Asbury student-athletes pursuing this mission.

Kessinger Lee presents Celia Pelfrey as the Serve > Train > Compete featured student-athlete.

Celia Pelfrey I Business Administration & Spanish | Women's Basketball | Sr. | Edgewood, Ky.

Celia is a senior on the women's basketball team at Asbury, majoring in business administration and spanish. She embodies the vision of Asbury University Athletics to use the platform of college athletics to share the light of Christ and compete for His glory.

Celia has exemplified SERVE by serving in Puerto Rico with LYNC8 on mission trips with Head Coach Chad Mayes.

She represents TRAIN by his consistent hard-work on the court and pushing her teammates to be the best they can be.

Celia reflects COMPETE with her competitive spirit on the court in competition.

Serve > Train > Compete
SERVE I The action of putting others before ourselves. TRAIN I The act of preparing through discipline and commitment. COMPETE I Pursuing excellence and success in competition.
  • What does serving, training, and competing for the glory of God mean to you?

It means being obedient to the will God has for my life, and also simply having fun with it. I play with the intention of using my God given talents to glorify Him, but I also think it is important to remember that competing should be fun.

  • Who are some of the coaches, faculty and staff that have impacted you at AU?

One thing that makes Asbury so special to me is that every single staff member here has made an impact on my life in one way or the other. Our Women’s Basketball coaching staff is like no other, and the way Coach Mayes cares about us outside of basketball is just one example of how our team is a true family. I am also grateful for the way Mark Whitworth strives to give us athletes the best experience possible.

  • How have you grown spiritually during your time at Asbury?

Going to a school that truly puts God first is something that was foreign to me, but as a result, I have further seen the ways in which we are called to be set apart. This has challenged me to continue growing in my faith, with the goal of my love for Christ being evident in all I do.

  • What advice would you give to new student-athletes coming to Asbury?

Embrace the environment you are in. As athletes, we are often pressured to fit a certain stereotype. But if you lean into this community and all it has to offer, you will grow to appreciate the ways in which Asbury Athletics has set us up to thrive post college sports.

"Celia is an example for all athletes, and people in general. She has worked so hard to make it back from her injury last season and what’s been amazing is she may actually be a better shooter now than she was before her injury. She worked tirelessly through rehab not only on her knee, but also on her game. She became a leader on this team by example. We are expecting her to have a big impact on this year’s team.”
