WILMORE, Ky. --- Asbury women's soccer (1-9-4) hosted Mount St. Joseph (MSJ),(10-5-2) on Monday night at the newly completed Phase One Outdoor Venue in Wilmore, Ky. The Lions took the victory in a tight match, 2-1.
Asbury was able to get off six shots on the night with three landing on goal. The Lions got seven shots off with six landing as on goal attempts.
Asbury led MSJ in saves with four to the Lions zero. Junior
Mary Tidei scored her first goal of the season off a beautiful assist from
Caroline Absher.
Madie Boehnlein and
Reese Bolton also each added their own shot on goal for the Eagles.
Violette Moore and
Maliya Crump each got 45 minutes in goal for AU. Crump recorded four great saves in the first half and Moore held the Lions scoreless in the second.
MSJ currently holds the second spot in the Heartland Conference rankings with a 7-1 conference record. The Lions scored the first goal of the match in the fourth minute off the foot of Alondra Sotelo to take a 1-0 lead.
Madie Boehlein put the first shot attempt on the board for the Eagles on the night, but missed right in the eighth minute.
Maliya Crump collected two of her four saves in the 13th and 17th minutes. Crump had many great stops on the night for the Eagles against an MSJ team who ranks fifth in their conference in goals scored (37).
Crump again recorded her last two saves in tough fashion with amazing work in goal in the 27th and 30th minutes. MSJ was able to rebound Crump's 30th minute save for their second goal of the match to take the lead to 2-0.
The AU defense held strong the rest of the half, sending the match into the break at 0-2 in favor of the Lions.
Madie Boehnlein added her second shot of the night in the 56th minute that was saved by the Lions to keep the score stale, 0-2.
AU attempted the next two shots of the match as their offense took tempo in the 70th and 81st minutes off the feet of
Peighton Sowder and
Payton Ardery but both flew right and kept the score at 0-2.
The Eagles broke through late and scored their first goal of the match in the 86th minute from
Mary Tidei. It was Tidei's first goal of the season and was set up very nicely by teammate,
Caroline Absher. Absher leads AU in assists on the season (4).
Asbury was not able to score after and the game ended 1-2 in favor of MSJ. The AU defense stood firm in the second half not allowing a single shot from the Lions, led in goal by
Violette Moore.
Asbury will next head to Lansing, Mi., to take on Great Lakes Christian College on Thursday at 1:30 PM.
