Eagles Fall to Maryville on the Road


STORY - THE ESSENTIALS
MARYVILLE, Tn. --- Asbury women's soccer (1-8-4) traveled to Maryville, Tn., on Thursday night and fell to Maryville College (11-2-3), the No. 1 ranked team in the Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS). Asbury and the CCS announced two weeks ago that the Eagles will become an official member of the conference July 1, 2024.

Asbury's offense was held in check by the Maryville defense, resulting in a 4-0 win by the Scots. The Maryville defense has been impressive all season as they lead the CCS in goals against per game (.44).

AU got two shots off and both were on goal attempts. Maryville was able to get off 18 shots on the night with nine leading to shot on goal (SOG) attempts. The Eagles recorded five saves compared to the Scots two.

Violette Moore and Maliya Crump both got 45 minutes in goal for AU, combining for five saves on the match. Reese Bolton and Grace Mattingly attempted both shots for the Eagles that each resulted in a shot on goal try.

The Scots got the game started with five shot attempts in the first 14 minutes of play, resulting in three off goal, one save by Violette Moore, and a goal in the 14th minute of play to take a 1-0 lead.

Maryville found the back of the net in the 32nd minute as well to take their lead to 2-0. to 0-2. Maryville is at the top of the CCS in goals scored on the season (53) and in goals scored per game (3.31).

The AU defense held strong the rest of the half, sending the match into the break at 0-2 in favor of the Scots.

Maliya Crump recorded her first of four saves in the 53rd minute with a great save in the bottom right side of goal to keep things at 0-2. Maryville produced another break through in the 58th minute to score their third goal of the match to take a 3-0 lead.

Reese Bolton got off the first shot of the night for AU in the 64th minute, but was nicely saved by the Scots keeper, Sydney Mahr to hold the score true, 0-3. Grace Mattingly got the second shot of the night off in the 71st minute that was also saved.

Maryville got their last goal of the night in the 76th minute to make things 0-4. Maliya Crump followed up the score with three tremendous saves to cap off the night. 

Asbury will next be in action Monday night in Wilmore, Ky., to take on Mount St. Joseph in their home finale at 7 PM.
