WILMORE, Ky. --- This evening, women's soccer hosted Johnson University, on their home turf in Wilmore, Ky. The teams kicked off at 7 pm.
Tonight was a special night for the Eagles, as they celebrated their 5 seniors.
The seniors celebrated tonight included
Delaney Long,
Maryah Jones,
Maya Thomas,
Carlie Alvis, and
Milli Moore.
Each of these players has added great value to the program on and off of the field, and will surely be missed next year for both their skill on the field and their addition to positive team culture.
After 90 minutes of full effort from both teams, the result of tonights matchup was 4-2, Asbury.
In the beginning of the match Asbury had clear possession of the ball, holding Johnson to 0 shots.
The Eagles kept control of the game until 10 minutes of play into the half, where Johnson unexpectedly slipped through Asbury's defense and found the first goal for the night. This placed the game at 1-0, Johnson.
It was just 5 minutes later when senior
Delaney Long answered back, finding the back of the net for the Eagles and tying the game 1-1.
Only 7 minutes following her goal, Long was able to connect with
Hannah Muncie to assist her in the second goal for AU, giving them a lead on the game.
This ended the first period, with the Eagles ahead of the Royals, 2-1.
Going into the second period of the game, AU started out strong defensively, and continued to have strong movement offensively.
After taking their first corner kick, Asbury was able to get a shot off, but it was one their second corner kick by Long, that lead to the team's third goal.
It was freshman
Sydney Tucker to score off of a header coming from the corner kick.
The Eagles have been working vigorously throughout the season to perfect their play off of a corner kick, which was evident in tonight's game.
It was Asbury again to make a play offensively with 34 minutes remaining in the game. This time it was
Audrey Van Lieu who was able to place the ball just out of reach from Johnson's goalkeeper, accurately placing the ball over the goalkeeper's head. Van Lieu earned the Eagles their fourth goal on the night, keeping their lead over Johnson, 4-1.
With 16 minutes left in the game, Johnson was able to sneak in their second goal, setting the score at 4-2.
Throughout the last ten minutes of the game the Royals countered hard, but the Eagles were able to hold them defensively.
