#TeamAU Featured Alumni: Kellianne (Crouse) Layton - Class of 2016

When did you graduate from Asbury?
I graduated from Asbury in 2016.

What was your major and what sport did you play?
I majored in Recreation and played Volleyball.

How has Asbury impacted your life?
Asbury has impacted my life both spiritually and relationally. I met my husband, Scott Layton while at Asbury and that has been the Lord's greatest gift to me apart from salvation. My time at Asbury was also a huge time of growth in my spiritual walk with Christ. My assistant coach at the time, Keith Stowe, now head coach of the team, encouraged me to apply for an FCA Volleyball internship in California before my senior year. Had I not been at Asbury I may not have heard of this opportunity. I'm so grateful to Coach Stowe for encouraging me to go because that summer was one of deep spiritual growth and discipleship training. I learned many things, but one being how we can use the sport of volleyball to grow the Kingdom. Sports can break down barriers and give us opportunities to interact with people all over the world.

Asbury's slogan "Start here, impact the world" is something Scott and I still discuss today. Jesus came to this earth, built relationships with people, and the gospel spread. Discipleship has a multiplication effect and that is what we are called to do on this earth. Wake each day asking the Lord for our daily assignment and trust Him to guide us  through the doors he opens. The relationships I built during my internship are how I ended up in my current role at Baylor University. I am grateful for the opportunities I had at Asbury which have prepared me for my current role.

What is your current occupation?
Director of Volleyball Operations at Baylor University

Favorite Asbury athletics memory?
My favorite athletics memory was actually something that took place off the court. Entering my freshman year our team went to Korea for 14 days. This trip was impactful in many ways. My grandparents, JB and Bette Crouse were missionaries in Korea for many years and it was really neat to walk in places they had walked and experience the culture they had been a part of for over 30 years.  It was also great to see where my dad grew up and the high school where he played sports. I think international trips with your team are impactful and facilitate growth. We served as a team together and spent time at an orphanage, visited with blind ladies, and ran camps in different parts of Korea. Serving together is great way to get to know your teammates on a deeper level and make incredible memories together. International trips are a really special opportunity Asbury offers, and I would encourage every team to take at least one trip every four years. I've seen these trips have a huge impact on our team here at Baylor as well, and I am forever grateful I had the opportunity at Asbury while I was an athlete.
