WILMORE, Ky. – The Asbury University women's soccer team put up a hard fight, but were ultimately edged 1-0 on Friday night against No. University of the Cumberlands.
Friday's match was Senior Night, and before the contest, seniors
Sarah Balkcom,
Georgia Clark,
Kaitlyn Maricle, and
Carley Pyles were recognized.
With the loss, AU slips to 1-6 on the year. The Eagles will play one more non-conference match before beginning River States Conference play next week.
The Patriots controlled the possession early on in the first half as AU had a tough time creating shot opportunities.
The Eagles defense played well and fended off the Patriots' attack for over 40 minutes, but in the final minute of the half, UC broke through on a goal scored inside the box.
Down 1-0 at half, Asbury played much better in the second half and tried to apply pressure on the UC defense. AU was able to keep the No. 25 Patriots scoreless in the second half and also created multiple offensive opportunites in the half.
The Eagles had six shots in the second half and posted a couple of solid looks.
Sarah Rocco's shot attempt off a corner kick missed just wide, and
Lisa Nesselroade's shot off a free kick was saved by the UC keeper.
AU made one final push in the final minutes of action to try and even the contest but were unable to find the back of the net as their best shot attempt landed wide with just over 1 minute left to play.
Sarah Balkcom led Asbury with a team-high two shots.
The Eagles return to the pitch on Monday at Thomas More in Crestview Hills, Ky. The match is set for a 7 PM start.
