Powell Posts Multiple Career-Highs in 88-83 Loss at IUS

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The Asbury University men's basketball team fell 88-83 in another close contest on Saturday afternoon against IU Southeast in River States Conference play.

AU falls to 1-3 in league play and moves to 5-8 on the year.

Sophomore Eric Powell led AU with a career day on Saturday. Powell led all scorers with a game-high and career-high 32 points, as he shot an incredible 8-11 from three-point range.

Powell finished 10-14 from the floor, also marking a career-high for most field goals made in a game.

Additionally, the eight three-point field goals in a single game are also a career-high for the Lexington, Ky. native.

Asbury shot the ball well from deep all afternoon finishing 50 percent from long range on 13-26 shooting attempts. Powell and Caleb Bonny combined for 12 made three-point field goals.

Leander Ridgeway had another strong outing for the Eagles finishing with 22 points, eight rebounds, and a team-high five assists.

Bonny posted 15 points while Siah Holifield recorded eight in the loss.  

The Eagles trailed 45-37 at the break as the Grenadiers ended the half on a 10-4 run heading into the locker room.

In the second half, the Eagles went to Powell early and often. AU reduced a double-digit lead down to just three, and then took the lead at 55-54 following another Powell triple.

After the game was tied up at 59-59, IU Southeast stormed ahead on a 10-2 run to take an eight-point lead at 69-61.

IUS remained ahead by double digits with 7 minutes left, but the Eagles fought back and made it just a two-point game at 82-80 after a score from Desmond Duke.

Southeast knocked down a couple of big shots on their end, including a shot that pushed the Grenadiers ahead 86-81 with only 14 seconds remaining.

For the game, AU shot just under 50 percent from the floor and scored 28 points in the paint and 11 points off of turnovers.

AU returns to action at home on Friday at 7 PM against Boyce in non-conference play.
