WILMORE, Ky. – Kelsey Johnson eclipsed 1,000 career points on Tuesday, and the Asbury women's basketball team won its seventh straight as they held off Brescia, 86-81 at the Luce Center.
The Eagles move to 12-1 on the year and are now 2-0 in River States Conference play.
On Johnson's big night, the junior also led AU in scoring with a team-high 17 points on 7-17 shooting from the floor.
Despite the win, Asbury got off to a slow start on Tuesday and trailed 18-7 early on in the opening quarter. However, an 11-0 run to end the period tied things up at 18 apiece.
AU shot 55 percent from three-point range in the second quarter as they totaled 26 points in the frame to lead 44-39 at the break.
The Eagles led by six heading into the fourth quarter and maintained double-digit lead for most of the fourth quarter. A three-point play from
Autumn Herriford and a basket from Johnson pushed AU well ahead at 78-63 with under five minutes to play.
Asbury remained in control at 84-71 with 1:39 to play, but Brescia would end the game on a 10-2 run to close the lead down to five points.
AU connected on 13 three-point field goals and were also efficient from the foul line on 13-19 shooting attempts.
Asbury's defense forced 15 turnovers and scored 11 points off of them. AU scored 30 points in the paint and produced 35 bench points.
Along with Johnson, five Eagles in total scored in double figures.
Amie Conley finished with 15 points and seven rebounds, while
Zaria Napier collected 14 points, six rebounds, and three blocks.
Jaclynn Ruble nearly posted a triple-double, as she finished with 12 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists.
Herriford rounded out the double figures scoring with 10.
Faith Osborne also added seven points in the victory.
AU hits the road for a Saturday contest at IU Southeast. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 PM.
