Asbury's Winning Streak Snapped with 81-73 Loss at IUS

NEW ALBANY, Ind. -- The Asbury University women's basketball team snapped their seven-game winning streak with a 81-73 loss to IU Southeast in New Albany, Indiana on Saturday afternoon.

Asbury drops to 12-2 overall with the loss and slips to 2-1 in conference play.

The Eagles started slow offensively and fell behind 19-13 after the opening period.

But a pair of three pointers from Jaclynn Ruble early in the second helped Asbury jump out to the lead, which they held onto going into halftime.

AU out-scored IU Southeast 21-14 in the period and thanks to four made three-point shots in the quarter, the Eagles led the Grenadiers 34-33 at intermission.

The lead changed several times in the third quarter, but IUS took the lead off a last-second layup following a steal to put the Grenadiers up 51-49 heading into the fourth quarter of action.

The fourth quarter saw 54 points combined from both squads, but the Eagles couldn't pull off the road victory, despite shooting 10-20 from the floor in the final quarter.

Haley Southerland's three gave AU a brief 59-57 advantage with six minutes to play, but IUS would quickly re-take the lead at 66-61 moments later.

The Eagles managed to reduce the deficit down to just one point at 70-69 after a Kelsey Johnson basket with 2:45 to play. However, the Grenadiers finished the contest on an 11-4 run to hold off the final charge from AU.

Autumn Herriford led Asbury with 18 points and six assists. The junior also finished with six rebounds.

Amie Conley tacked on a team-high 17 rebounds down low and also added eight points.

Johnson finished in double figures scoring with 16 points and five rebounds.

Freshman Jaclynn Ruble collected eight points and seven rebounds in the loss, while Sarah Dennison also posted eight points.

The Eagles shot 32 percent from the field and scored 26 points in the paint. AU also produced 15 points off the bench and scored 10 points off turnovers.

Asbury will return to play on December 19 at Morehead State for an exhibition game.
