PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The Asbury University women's basketball team rallied from a double-digit deficit at Pikeville on Saturday, winning 87-86 to extend their winning streak to six games.
The Eagles also improve to 11-1 on the year, which marks the best start in the past decade for the program.
Saturday's contest was filled with 12 ties and 10 lead changes as both teams got after it. Pikeville got off to a strong start and led 29-19 after the first quarter.
Asbury played much better in the second period and out-scored the Bears 28-20, while shooting nearly 60 percent from the floor.
Autumn Herriford led AU in scoring at the break with 12 points, but UPike remained out in front 49-47.
In the second half, AU tied up the game at 57-57 following a three-point shot from
Kelsey Johnson. The Eagles then took the lead moments later at 63-61 after a pair of Herriford free throws. Pikeville would end the third quarter on a 10-4 run to re-take the lead at 71-67 heading into the final frame.
The Bears pushed their lead out to 74-67 early in the fourth, but the Eagles began their comeback with a 9-0 run. Back-to-back three-point shots from
Faith Osborne and
Nave Winn cut the lead down to one, and then a free throw from
Zaria Napier and bucket from Johnson gave AU a 76-74 edge.
The fourth quarter continued to be back-and-forth from both squads, but Asbury held on to an 84-83 lead in the final minutes. Napier would score the final three points for the Eagles to preserve the victory. Pikeville had a chance to win the game at the final buzzer, but missed on a three-point attempt.
AU shot 51 percent from the floor, knocked down 10 threes, and shot 11-14 from the foul line. The Eagles also scored 12 second chance points and 11 points off of turnovers.
Napier led all scorers with a game-high 22 points and eight rebounds. Herriford and Johnson both scored 19 points to help pace the offense. Herriford brought in six boards and was also perfect from the foul line on 6-6 free throw attempts.
Amie Conley also scored in double figures with 10 points and five rebounds.
Faith Osborne added nine, while
Sarah King dished out a team-high four assists. Additionally,
Sarah Dennison collected seven rebounds in the win.
Asbury will face Brescia at home on Tuesday at 5:30 PM in their second River States Conference game. The Eagles defeated IU Kokomo 98-71 in the conference opener on Tuesday.
