WILMORE, Ky. -- The Asbury University women's basketball team won their fifth straight game on Tuesday evening at the Luce Center, winning in dominating fashion 98-71 over IU Kokomo.
The Eagles open up River States Conference play 1-0 and are now 10-1 on the year.
AU left no doubt on Tuesday, and got off to a great start, as they shot nearly 50 percent from the field in the first quarter and maintained a six-point advantage at 25-19.
Asbury burst out to a 12-2 run early in the second quarter to build a 13-point lead at 37-24 following a three from
Kelsey Johnson.
The Eagles remained out in front 44-31 at the break.
Kokomo cut the lead down to 59-51 midway through the third period, but AU ended the quarter on a 15-5 run to increase their lead out to 74-56 heading into the final frame.
The Eagles continued to score from anywhere on the floor, and played solid defense, holding the Cougars to just 30 percent shooting in the final quarter. AU out-scored IUK 24-15 in the fourth and ended the game with 32 points scored off turnovers.
For the game, AU connected on 13 three-point field goals and shot 42 percent from the floor. Asbury also finished the contest 83 percent from the foul line on 25-30 attempts.
Autumn Herriford scored a team-high 22 points and dished out a team-high seven assists in the win.
Six Eagles in total scored in double figures on Tuesday.
Zaria Napier added 18 points on 6-11 shooting from the field, including 3-4 from behind the arc. She also posted a team-high 12 rebounds.
Sarah Dennison collected 15 points and five rebounds, while
Kelsey Johnson and
Jaclynn Ruble both scored 13 apiece.
Rounding out the double figures scoring was
Sarah King, who recorded 10 points.
AU will travel to Pikeville for a Saturday matchup on the road. Saturday's contest is set to begin at 2 PM.
