MIDWAY, Ky. – The Asbury University volleyball team took care of business on Tuesday evening with a straight set sweep at Midway in River States Conference play.
The Eagles dominated the opening set 25-11 and then cruised 25-9 in the second. AU won the final set 25-20 to preserve the sweep. With the win, the Eagles move to 5-9 on the year and 2-3 in RSC league play.
Asbury logged 36 kills as a team and only committed season-best seven errors throughout the match. AU also tallied a .326 hitting percentage, while Midway finished with 20 errors and a -.011 hitting percentage.
The Eagles wasted no time on Tuesday in building a large lead. After taking a quick 7-1 lead in the opening set, AU extended its lead out to 14-3, and then pushed it out to 21-8. A kill from
Mari-Grace Alexander ended the set at 25-11.
It was a similar story for the Eagles in the second frame as they soared out ahead 12-2. Asbury then led 20-9 and won the final five points of the set, as
Julia Thompson's kill gave the Eagles a 2-0 set lead.
In the final set, the score was much closer as the score was 19-16 later on, but Asbury did not allow Midway to gain any momentum and the Eagles finished out the set strong with back-to-back kills from
Lizzy Rempel and Thompson to seal the sweep.
Seniors Thompson and Rempel led the Eagles with 10 and eight kills respectively.
Hailey Jordan finished with a team-high 16 assists and 10 digs, while
Taegan Montgomery notched 12 assists as well.
Jessie Sandefur tabbed 10 digs and
Charis Wieschhaus added nine.
Kenzie Harmon led the Eagles' defense with three block assists.
Asbury finished with eight blocks on the night.
Montgomery led AU with three service aces, while
Maddie Lewis and Wieschhaus both had two apiece. Asbury also posted a season-best nine service aces on Tuesday evening.
The Eagles will return to action at home on Friday evening against West Virginia Tech at 7 PM.
