Volleyball Swept at Home to Bethel

WILMORE, Ky. -- The Asbury University volleyball team had a tough outing on Wednesday evening at the Luce Center as they fell 3-0 to Bethel University in non-conference play. Bethel won the match 25-20, 25-21, 25-19. The Eagles met with BU earlier in the season in McKenzie, Tenn. but were swept on the road.

Asbury moves to 10-12 on the season with the loss and remains at 6-5 in River States Conference play.

Bethel finished the contest with 40 kills and a hitting percentage of .190.

AU was limited to only 28 kills on Wednesday and collected a hitting percentage of .083 for the match.

The Eagles were active up at the net in the first set and registered nine total blocks throughout the contest.

Bethel built a quick lead in the first set but Asbury was able to regroup and took the lead back at 16-15 following a block assist from Bethany Fye and Julia Thompson. However, Bethel would win the next six points to take a 21-16 lead and AU was unable to mount a late comeback in the set.

Asbury led 12-11 midway through the second set as they tired to even up the match, but once again, BU went on another quick spurt and won six consecutive points for a 17-12 lead. AU was able to cut the lead back down to 22-19 moments later but Bethel finished off the set 25-21.

In the final set, Asbury was back in the thick of things as the set was back-and-forth early on. The Eagles only trailed by two points at 15-13, but Bethel would go on a late surge once more to secure the set and the match.

Bethany Fye recorded a team-high 10 kills, four blocks, and one service ace. Senior Julia Thompson posted four kills and four blocks, tying Fye for a team-high on the night.

Jessie Sandefur notched 18 digs, while Maddie Lewis added nine.

Taegan Montgomery tallied 15 assists and Charis Wieschhaus totaled nine assists in the loss.

The Eagles are back in action in Pittsburgh at Carlow on Friday evening.
