Asbury will enter its third season of competition under head coach Joe Barr in 2016-17.
Last season the Eagles seemed prime to rise to the top of the conference under Barr's tutelage. They took a first-place finish in the KIAC Fall Preview but unfolded in the KIAC Championships in the Spring, faltering late as a team in the third round and finishing third. They improved on the season prior and also place two golfers on the KIAC All-Conference squads in Matt McCurry and Jordan Gilbert. They preceded that season by finishing fourth in the KIAC Tournament with Barr at the helm. They picked up a team-best finish at The Brescia Invitational on March 26-27 (2nd). Barr helped Daniel Patterson to an appearance on the All-KIAC Team, becoming Barr's first all-conference golfer.
Barr, a 2013 graduate from UK with a degree in Corporate Communications, comes in to lead the men's program with a decorated playing career of his own. As a four-year letterman at Kentucky, Barr played in 20 rounds of golf during his senior season with the Wildcats and garnered honors as an AJGA All-American. He was also named to the All-SEC Academic team four times.
Other accolades for Barr include a qualification for the U.S. Pub Links Championship in 2012, the 2011 Lexington City Championship, 2008 Junior State March Play Championship, three all-state selections at Woodford County High school as well as being named a two-time Kentucky Golf Association PGA Player of the year in both 2006 and 2007.
Coach Barr works at nearby Moss Hills Golf Club and resides in Lexington with his wife.
