WILMORE, Ky. – Freshmen
Fabricio Turner and
Ariel Ortega netted their first career goals as the Asbury men's soccer (2-3-2, 0-0-0 CCS) defeated Spalding University (1-6-1, 0-0-0 SLIAC), 4-1, on Monday night at the Gray Outdoor Venue.
Asbury came out firing, needing just 3:12 to grab the early advantage. Turner opened the scoring with his first goal of his career to put the Eagles ahead, 1-0. Just over three minutes later, Absher doubled the AU lead with a goal at the 6:15 mark.
Spalding responded in the 15th minute when Benit Mulume converted a penalty kick to cut the Asbury advantage to 2-1. The Eagles answered quickly, as Absher struck for his second goal of the night at 17:24 off an assist from
Ben Shifflet, sending Asbury into the break with a 3-1 lead.
After three goals on seven shots in the opening half, AU maintained its two-goal advantage through much of the second. Goalkeeper
Landen Lonesky stopped both Spalding shots on goal after halftime, including saves in the 61st and 84th minutes.
Asbury put the finishing touch on the win in the 83rd minute.
Eli Redpath connected with Ortega, who scored his first career goal to stretch the Eagles' advantage to 4-1.
The Eagles finished the night with 12 shots, placing six on goal, while holding Spalding to eight shots and three on target. Lonesky played all 90 minutes in his first career start in goal for AU and, collected two saves while allowing just the penalty-kick goal.
Absher led the Asbury attack with two goals on two shots, while Turner and Ortega each added a goal. Shifflet and Redpath each recorded an assist in the victory.
