MONTGOMERY, Ala. --- The Asbury women's soccer team (4-1-1, 1-0 CCS) opened conference play defeating Huntingdon College (2-5-0, 0-1 CCS) 3-2 behind a hat trick from senior captain
Anna Sparks.
Asbury controlled possession and the attack throughout the contest, outshooting Huntingdon 29-4 and holding an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Eagles put 11 shots on goal and forced eight saves from the Hawks' goalkeeper.
The Eagles struck first in the 15th minute when Sparks finished a chance from Maggie Perry for a 1-0 lead.
Huntingdon answered in the 32nd minute to level the score at 1-1 heading into halftime despite Asbury's dominant first-half performance.
Coming out of the break, Sparks wasted little time restoring the Asbury advantage, scoring just 46 seconds into the second half. After a weather delay halted play for more than an hour, Sparks completed her hat trick in the 55th minute to push the Eagles' lead to 3-1.
Huntingdon cut the deficit to 3-2 in the 74th minute, but Asbury's defense held firm over the final stages to secure the conference-opening win.
Goalkeeper Peyton Steiniger earned the victory and made one save.
