DECATUR, Ga. – Asbury volleyball (4-3, 1-0 CCS) opened Collegiate Conference of the South action with a 3-1 road victory over Agnes Scott (1-2, 0-1 CCS) on Friday night in Decatur, Ga.
Asbury responded after dropping the opening set to take the next three, 22-25, 25-8, 25-12, 25-14.
The Eagles produced 58 kills while hitting .275 as a team, holding Agnes Scott to 20 kills and a .009 hitting percentage. AU also collected 73 digs, 56 assists and eight service aces in the win.
Junior Isabelle VandeSchraaf led the way with an all-around performance, recording a team-high 15 kills on a .462 hitting percentage to go along with 20 digs, three service aces and two block assists.
Megan Schelling added 11 kills while hitting .348, while Sophie Glushchak finished with nine kills. Abigail Bruner was efficient in the middle with eight kills on 14 attempts and just one error for a .500 hitting percentage, adding two solo blocks, a block assist and an ace.
Agnes Scott took control of a back-and-forth opening set that featured six ties and four lead changes. The hosts built an early advantage before Asbury fought back to tie the set at 15-15 and again at 18-18. The Scotties eventually held off the Eagles, 25-22, to take a 1-0 match lead.
AU answered in dominant fashion in the second. After trailing 3-2, Asbury rattled off nine straight points to move ahead 11-3. The Eagles never looked back, closing the set 25-8 while hitting .385 with 12 kills and only two attack errors.
Asbury carried the momentum into the third set. Kills from VandeSchraaf, Bruner and Schelling helped AU gain separation before the Eagles broke the set open in the latter stages. Asbury produced its best offensive output of the night in the third with 19 kills and a .324 hitting percentage, taking the frame 25-12 for a 2-1 advantage.
The Scotties jumped ahead 4-0 in the fourth, but AU quickly responded. Asbury tied the set at 5-5 and moved in front behind kills from Glushchak, Schelling and Julia Wright. With the Eagles leading 15-11, the visitors finished the match on a 10-3 run. Wright delivered the final kill to secure the 25-14 set and the 3-1 conference victory.
Asbury's offense hit above .300 in each of the final three sets, posting marks of .385, .324 and .310 after hitting .128 in the opening frame.
Ashlynn Smith led the defensive effort with 22 digs and added two aces, while VandeSchraaf collected 20 digs and Katelyn Chapman added 12. Sara Beth Gray handed out a team-high 26 assists, with Chapman adding 19 assists.
