CINCINNATI, Ohio. – Asbury University volleyball (3-3, 0-0 CCS) earned an impressive non-conference road victory on Tuesday evening, defeating Mount St. Joseph (7-2, 0-0 HCAC) in four sets (33-31, 25-20, 17-25, 25-14) inside the Harrington Center
Asbury opened the match with a thrilling first set that featured 20 ties and seven lead changes before the Eagles eventually outlasted the Lions, 33-31. After fighting off multiple set points, Asbury closed the frame behind key kills from Isabelle VandeSchraaf and Sophie Glushchak to seize the early momentum.
The Eagles continued their strong play in the second set, using a balanced attack and a service run that included a pair of aces to erase an early deficit. Asbury eventually pulled away late for a 25-20 victory and a commanding 2-0 match lead.
Mount St. Joseph responded in the third set, capitalizing on a strong offensive stretch to claim a 25-17 win and extend the match. However, the Eagles answered emphatically in the fourth. Asbury raced to an early advantage and never looked back, holding the Lions to just .114 hitting in the final frame while cruising to a 25-14 set victory to secure the match.
Asbury finished with 61 kills and a .265 team hitting percentage while recording 84 digs and seven team blocks. The Eagles also totaled 59 assists and seven service aces in the victory.
Juniors Isabelle VandeSchraaf and Sophie Glushchak led the offensive attack with 15 kills apiece. VandeSchraaf added 18 digs for a double-double and posted a .343 hitting percentage, while Glushchak contributed 16 points and two block assists.
Megan Schelling added 12 kills on a .333 hitting percentage, and Aliah Jones was efficient in the middle with seven kills on just 11 attempts while hitting .545 and contributing four block assists.
Sara Beth Gray directed the offense with 27 assists, while Katelyn Chapman added 20 assists. Defensively, Ashlynn Smith paced the back row with 21 digs, and Emma Dean chipped in eight digs and three block assists.
