PEARL, Miss. — Asbury baseball (14-26, 7-11 CCS) was topped by No. 13 nationally ranked Belhaven (28-11, 12-6 CCS) in their regular season finale 11-6 on Sunday night.
The Eagles wasted no time getting on the board in the first. CJ Hussey drove in a run on a fielder's choice, scoring Hank Burns to give Asbury a quick 1-0 lead. After Belhaven answered in the bottom half, Asbury put together a strong second inning.
Avery Hare lined an RBI single up the middle, and Andrew Billington added a sacrifice fly to push the Eagles ahead 3-1.
Belhaven chipped away in the third to tie the game before taking the lead for good in the fifth. The game broke open in the sixth inning, where Belhaven capitalized on walks, wild pitches, and timely hitting to plate six runs and build a 10-3 advantage.
Despite the deficit, Asbury showed fight late. In the eighth inning, Cam Weaver delivered an RBI single down the line, and Edison Burke followed with a two-run single to trim the margin to 10-6.
However, Belhaven added an insurance run in the bottom half to secure the 11-6 win.
On the mound, the Eagles used a number of arms throughout the contest, with Levi Kelly turning in a steady relief outing, giving the Eagles 2.1 innings in relief and zero earned runs.
Brandon McKindley also provided a scoreless inning out of the bullpen to help settle things late as Asbury looked to stay within striking distance.
