WILMORE, Ky. --- Junior equine assisted services major Abigail Moffat lead the Asbury softball team (9-1, 0-0 CCS) today with 10 RBIs to power AU past Sewanee (5-9, 0-0 SAA), 8-1 and 8-0.
Game One | ASBURY 8, SEWANEE 1
The Eagles struck for a run in the second inning, added three more in the fourth and broke the game open with a four-run fifth to build an 8-0 cushion. Sewanee's only run came in the top of the fifth.
Moffat set the tone in Game 1 with an RBI double up the middle in the second inning and later came around to score, giving Asbury a 1-0 lead. In the fourth, she cleared the bases with a three-run home run down the left-field line, stretching the advantage to 4-0. One inning later, Moffat doubled to left to drive in two more as part of a four-run frame that put the game out of reach and capped her six-RBI outing.
The Eagles backed that offensive surge with efficient pitching and clean defense. Josie Potter worked five strong innings, allowing just one run on four hits with one strikeout. The Eagles did not commit an error in the opener and allowed only four total hits, while Sewanee issued eight walks and committed two errors.
AU's offense was balanced behind Moffat in the first game. Tori Giurgevich scored three runs and drove in one, helping to set the table in front of the heart of the order. Overall, the Eagles turned six hits and eight walks into eight runs, leaving eight runners on base but generating enough timely contact to support Potter's outing. Abi Thompson came on in relief to finish the sixth and seventh and close out the 8-1 decision.
Game Two | ASBURY 8, SEWANEE 0
Abi Thompson went the distance with a six-inning shutout, scattering four hits, walking none and striking out four.
AU broke through in the middle innings and then erupted in the sixth to put the run-rule into play. The Eagles pushed across two runs in the fourth and added another in the fifth before a five-run sixth made it 8-0. Moffat continued her big day with two more hits and four RBIs, giving her 10 runs driven in across the doubleheader.
Samantha Bottom sparked the Eagles' lineup in the nightcap, collecting three hits, scoring twice and adding an RBI. Emily Zink chipped in a two-hit, one-RBI performance, while Moira Tinsley delivered a key double to center in the sixth and came around to score as Asbury broke the game open. The Eagles finished with 13 hits in Game 2 and drew seven walks, stranding 14 runners but consistently applying pressure to Sewanee's pitching staff.
Sewanee managed four hits in each game but was held scoreless in the finale and limited to a single run on the day. The Tigers committed three errors across the doubleheader and issued a combined 15 walks, while Asbury played error-free in both contests and allowed just two walks in 13 innings.
AU will travel to Berry College on Tuesday March 17 for a doubleheader starting at 2 pm.
