Game Recap: Baseball |

Burke Four Hits in Game Two; Eagles Fall in Doubleheader to Oberlin 6-5, 5-4

STORY - THE ESSENTIALS

WILMORE, Ky. --- Asbury baseball (5-8, 0-0 CCS) dropped a Saturday doubleheader to Oberlin College (2-2-1, 0-0 NCAC) falling by one run in each game, 6-5 and 5-4 despite freshman Edison Burke's four hits in game two.

Game One | OBERLIN 6, ASBURY 5

Asbury struck quickly in the bottom of the first inning. After back-to-back baserunners reached, Cam Weaver delivered a two-out double into the gap, driving in two runs to give the Eagles a 2–0 lead. The early momentum carried through the middle innings as Asbury pitching limited Oberlin's opportunities and kept the Yeomen off the scoreboard.

The Eagles added to their lead in the sixth when Andrew Billington launched a solo home run, extending the advantage to 3–0. Through six innings, Asbury controlled the pace of play with timely hitting and steady defense.

Oberlin began its comeback in the seventh, capitalizing on a pair of opportunities to cut into the deficit. The Yeomen added another run in the eighth to make it a one-run contest before breaking through in the ninth with a four-run inning to take a 6–3 lead.

Asbury responded in the bottom half of the ninth. Hank Burns connected on a two-run home run to pull the Eagles within one, and the tying run came to the plate in the closing moments. However, the comeback attempt fell just short as Oberlin secured the final out to seal the 6–5 result.

Weaver paced the Eagles offensively with three hits and two RBIs, while Billington and Burns each provided key extra-base power.

Cayden Devine started the game on the mound providing a good boost despite picking up the loss. Devine went 6.1 innings, while allowing just one hit and one earned run. Brady Robeson and Brandon McKindley each came out of the bullpen in a strong effort.

Game Two | OBERLIN 5, ASBURY 4

After a scoreless first two innings, Oberlin struck for a pair of runs in the third inning, highlighted by a two-run homer from Patrick Leonard that gave the Yeomen an early 2–0 advantage. Asbury answered in the bottom of the frame when Andrew Billington tripled home Edison Burke, trimming the deficit to 2–1.

Oberlin added on in the fifth and eighth innings, extending its lead behind timely hitting and capitalizing on opportunities to push the score to 5–1. The Eagles' pitching staff kept the game within reach, working to minimize damage after the early offensive outburst by Oberlin.

Asbury's offense mounted a late charge in the ninth inning. Aaron Beaman walked with the bases loaded to bring home a run, and Cam Weaver followed with a bases-loaded walk that put another tally on the board. A wild pitch then allowed Andrew Billington to score, cutting the Oberlin lead to just one run at 5–4, but the rally fell just short with the final out securing the victory for the visiting Yeomen.

Offensively, Edison Burke led the charge with a strong day at the plate, chipping in four hits and igniting the late rally, while Billington and Beaman each contributed RBI knocks in support. The Eagles finished with nine hits as a team.

On the mound, Asbury's pitchers worked hard to keep the game within striking distance, with starter Devin Walker turning in 4.1 innings of work before handing the ball to the bullpen. Samuel Marshall and Andrew Gilliam shined out of the pen, Marshall tossing two strong innings while Gilliam pitched a perfect ninth.
