DANVILLE, Ky.--- Asbury volleyball (0-2, 0-0 CCS) opened its 2025 campaign on Friday in Danville, Ky., at the Centre Invitational, slipping to No. 9 Washington and Lee University (W&L), 3-0, and Centre College, 3-0.
Game One | WASHINGTON & LEE 3, ASBURY 0
The preseason-ranked No. 9 team in the country, Washington and Lee, took the first three sets over Asbury to secure the win (25-12, 25-14, 25-22).
W&L had 39 kills in the match and held Asbury to 26 kills. The Generals hit for a .223 percentage offensively, and held the Eagles to a .074 hitting percentage.
The W&L defense allowed no service aces during the match, but secured seven aces of their own. Asbury had four blocks on defense, while W&L had two denies.
Sophomore trio Isabelle VandeSchraff,
Sophie Glushchak, and
Megan Schelling led AU in kills with seven, six, and five finishes. VandeSchraaf also had 17 digs defensively, followed by senior
Riley McChord with 12 digs.
Game Two | CENTRE 3, ASBURY 0
The Centre volleyball team, receiving votes in the top-25 to start the year, two three consecutive two-point set wins to take the match (25-23, 25-23, 26-24).
Asbury improved their hitting percentage in the second match of the season, 38 kills at a .165 percentage. Centre's offense had 44 kills at .230 percentage that carried the win.
VandeSchraaf had 10 kills with 12 digs in her first double-double of the season. McChord led with 15 digs and also three aces.
AU senior
Sidney Haysley had eight kills and two service aces. Senior
Lucy Kate Gray dished 19 assists with 10 digs for her first. double-double of the year.
